Trying to get a direct train or bus from Wroclaw to Prague. HELP. Any suggestions?

Re: Wroclaw-Prague

is the easiest site to find European train timetables, imo.

There are several trains, but it's a long journey: 8+ hours.

www.polrail.com is the Polish railway website, for times and fares.

will give you times and fares (in English) for Wroclaw-Prague bus. Departs 0230, arrives 0630, costs from 100PLN one-way.

There are no direct trains. You can go also via Germany (usually involves going via Görlitz) - it is MUCH more expensive than going via Katowice or Raciborz!

Buy domestic tickets only, it will be much cheaper than buying a Wroclaw-Praha through ticket.

An acceptable connection:

- depart Wroclaw ar 10:15, arrive Kedzierzyn at 12:02. The same train will arrive Katowice at 13:10 and Krakow at 14:55 (just in case you are not on-time!). The train number is 82106.
- depart Kedzierzyn at 12:07, arrive Raciborz at 12:42, the train number is 99921
- depart Raciborz at 14:46, arrive Bohumin at 15:25, the train number is 3353
- depart Bohumin at 15:50, arrive Praha at 20:00, train number EC-142

With less changes you can catch trains at either Katowice or Krakow.

Train EC-105 will depart Katowice at 14:32 and will arrive Bohumin at 15:02 (you can use EC-142 from Bohumin).

There is a night train departing Katowice (23:52, arriving Praha at 6:41), it has couches departing from Krakow (22:25).

Katowice station is famous for being a homeless shelter in disguise, why not go to Krakow as early as possible and spend as much time there as possible?

Take the train #63100 departing Wroclaw at 6:15, arrive Krakow at 10:56 or take the train IRN 7310 (compulsory reservation!) departing 8:15, arriving Krakow at 12:55.

That will allow you to spend the better part of the day in Krakow.

If your time is more tight, take the train# IRN 8310, it departs Wroclaw at 18:20, arrives Katowice at 21:10, you will have enough time to catch the train to Praha which departs Katowice at 23:52.

Go by bus! :-)

Yes, despite the ungodly time of departure, the bus is not just cheaper and faster, but the Katowice train station will be avoided - which can be a yucky experience in the evening.

Travel Tips for Wroclaw

Polish your Polish! The speech of the street.

by wroclawiak

My first lesson I am going to start with an offensive word. Why? A lot of people I've met so
far have asked me about this word.

kurwa - [koorva] with the vibrating 'r'

It's a very common word used in the sopken langauge.
It could be translated as a “whore”, although in some contexts could be translated as a “***”, or even as “***”. The use of this swear word is more flexible than the use of the English word "***".It is often used instead of a “comma” in the speech.

Oh, kurwa, jak ja cie kocham! , ..... , how do I love you!!!

Wow, the English swear or offensive words are not allowed to be published on this page.

"Three little niggers"

by Mikebond

How nice and how unexpected are these "three little niggers", located on a house of the Rynek. Agatha Christie would wonder where the other seven are!

(Note: in case you didn't understand it, the title of this tip hints at Ten Little Niggers, i.e. the original title of Agatha Christie's novel Ten Little Indians. I wrote it as a literary allusion and I hope no one feels offended by reading the word "nigger".)

Public toilets

It is customary in Poland that ladies toilets show a circle or the words "dla pan", whereas gents toilets show a triangle or the words "dla panow". This can be quite confusing when only the signs are shown on the toilet doors in a restaurant.
Public toilets usually charge anything between 1 and 2 Zloty, so make sure you have some change available.

Monument Boleslaw Chrobry

by german_eagle

Boleslaw Chrobry (967 - 1025) was from 992 on as Boleslaw I. Duke of Poland, 1003/04 Duke of Bohemia and from 1000 on first King of Poland. He established the Archbishopry Gniezno which was independent from Magdeburg and convince Emperor Otto III. to acknowledge the independence of Poland from the German Empire (Act of Gniezno in 1000). He tried to unite the western slavonic peoples in which he succeeded for a while. Towards the end of his life Poland was a great power in Europe, but not for long - the neighbouring countries felt threatened, especially the German Empire in the west and the Kiewvsky Rus in the east.

The location of this monument is at Swidnicka st. where it crosses the green ring around the old town (next to opera house).

Wroclaw's main train station is a 15min walk north of the Old Town. There are several trains daily to/from Warszawa (5h), Krakow (3,5h) and Poznan (2h), as well as a night train to Prague (6h).
The city's several tram lines are of limited use to the casual tourist since the Old Town is easily and best explored on foot.
