Question about birth records and history as Breslau

by MichaelNesmith

Hello,
I was interested in visiting Wroclaw (formerly Breslau) to find information about my mother who was born and raised there during pre-WW2. I also wanted to know if anyone could give places to see or historical sites that pre-date the war. Thanks.

RE: Question about birth records and history as Breslau

by adin

BEFORE visiting there try doing some preliminary research by writing to the proper authority for information.
Good place to start is:
http://www.wroclaw.pl/ms/english
where you can find links to city's authorities
where you can try :
Divisions and departments of the Municipal Office (http://www.wroclaw.pl/m6902)
on the left-side pane. At the botom of it there is the Registry Office
which is actually the civil records office (USC: Urząd Stanu Cywilnego).
The direct link is in Polish only: http://www.wroclaw.pl/m3493/

Another one is the state archive office:
http://www.ap.wroc.pl
although in Polish only, on this site of state archive on Wroclaw you can find their phone numbers snail-mail address and e-mail address by clicking on "adresi i telefony" on right side menu.

Travel Tips for Wroclaw

Bridges of Wroclaw

by HORSCHECK

Can you believe that there are only 3 European cities that have more bridges than Wroclaw?
They are Venice, Amsterdam and St. Petersburg. Wroclaw is home to more than 120 bridges that connect the 12 islands on which the city is built.
One of the most famous bridges of Wroclaw is probably the Grunwaldzki Bridge (Most Grunwaldzki). Former names of the bridge were Imperial Bridge and Adolf Hitler Bridge. It was completed in 1910 and still is Poland's longest suspension bridge.

Rasberry beer and greasy bread with herbs

by GirlUpNorth

I tasted this in the heart of Wroclaw and I got the impression this is a very local thing to eat. You can by cheap, excellent beer with almost every flavour and from street stands you can buy a huge slice of bread covered with grease and herbs or garlic. It's a very unique taste when put together! I had some rasberry beer which was pretty and pink and tasted really nice. Can't remember the price (it was a few years ago) but it was anything but expensive. Just try it!

off wroclaw: jelena gora (day-trip)

by call_me_rhia

Jelena Gora is an easy day-trip from Wroclaw: the best way to get there is by train, and it takes about 2-3 hours. Coming into town is a sad business: just before it you pass the suburbs: a real communistic wasteland – all you can see is endless grey bee-hive buildings…a lot like a parking-lot. Fortunately enough Jelena Gora‘s centre is quite pleasant. Buildgings here are the kind of colourful ones I like a lot: they are more modest-looking than in Wroclaw but not as melanchonic as in Krakow. Yet you see that this countryside area‘s poorer than the cities… even on the people‘s faces and behaviour. And all around, the beautiful Sudeten mountains

Wroclaw is a main railway junction

by marishabandb

Wroclaw is a main railway junction, so there are many trains to and from major cities in Poland and also many international rail connections.

You can access the timetable for Polish Railways (PKP)on www.pkp.com.pl for further information and connections.

Once you are in Wroclaw, everything is within walking distance.
