Travel Tips for Wroclaw

Architecture mix and first impressions

by german_eagle

When visiting Wroclaw please keep in mind that the city was severely affected by the war in 1945. About 80% of the buildings in the centre were destroyed. Thus you'll see a relatively small (for a city this size) reconstructed old town around the Rynek square and rather ugly post-war architecture (I know that sort of architecture has fans, too, LOL).

I probably forgot that (wishful thinking I guess). I was quite disappointed when I left the railway station and walked along Jozefa Pilsudskiego street - a mix of a few nicely restored buildings and many buildings that were still waiting for taking care of. Besides I was immediately put off by the air pollution/exhaust emissions. It got better in the centre of the old town but still ... there was a certain smell in the air. Reminded me of the old times before the fall of the wall.

Wroclaw University

by magor65

Wroclaw University was founded in 1702. At present about 47 thousand young people study here in different departments. The main building is situated parallely to the Odra river within the 5-minute walking distance from the Market Square. At the building's top you can see the Mathematical Tower, where in the 19th century was an atronomical observatory. Apart from the Tower tourists can enter: Oratorium Marianum and Aula Leopoldina. In the 19th century Oratorium Marianum due to its perfect acoustics was considered one of the best musical halls in Europe. Many famous musicians performed here ( f.e. Edward Grieg, Ferenz Liszt, Anton Rubinstein). Unfortunately, it was destroyed in 1945 during the bombing of Wroclaw. Rebuilt in 1997, today it's the place where concerts, conferences and balls are held.

The Bermuda Triangle in Wroclaw.

by wroclawiak

Are you fed up with visiting of tourist places in Wroclaw. Have you a fancy for something different? Very well then!! Let’s get going through a shady district called by locals inofficially the “Bermuda Triangle”. I think every town in the world has its own “Bermuda Triangle” but if you ask any resident of Wroclaw where is the “Bermuda Triangle” district you will be answered. If you like a little bit thrill take a chance to visit it because it changes and it cease to exsist in a couple of years.
Why do the residents of Wroclaw call the district the “Bermuda Triangle”.
It is one of the most dangerous and poorest districts in Wroclaw. The criminal acts commited here are above the average and you can be lost here for ever like ships in the real Bermuda Triangle. ;-) To tell you the truth is not so bad but walking there is not fully safe. Watch out and be aware of your surroundings and remember - a robbery can occur there !!!! Don’t go there in the night. I ‘ve not seen any policeman there. There is the world for itself.
You should visit the district because you can find here the different Wroclaw. Wroclaw is not only the Market Square and Cathedral Island. You will see here old houses in very bad condition with shabby facades. Most of them need renovation but if you are really sharp witted you will certainly find here some very good motivs for your camera.
The district changes. Old houses are destroyed and new buildings have been built. Some houses have been fully renovated and the district looses its primary charakter. I think I will be missing it.
I have been told that some streets won’t be renovated at all because they are sometimes used as reall scenery for war film makers.
You will find in my travelogue a map with a walking route through the “Bermuda Triangle District”.

by Toja about the ancient place

Some people believe, this little hexagonal church on the right (St. Mark) is located in the ancient spot which is a special energetic place.. called czakram. However, I found information that such a place is in fact in Poland (there are 7 in the whole world according to some Hidu believe) but not in Wroclaw. The real czakram should be looked for in the ancient castle - Wawel in Krakow - the former Polish capital city.
In the centre - St. Cross and St. Bartholomew
on the left, behind the fence - the botanical gardens St. Marc is very rarely opened.. but.. no extra outfit required the one for the cathedral will do
:-)
