Aula Leopoldinum...
by coceng
I was really lucky, accompanied by a Polish friend; he took me to see Aula Leopoldinum.
This is situated in the University building which itself is a historical building.
This is on the 1st floor of the building.
Elaborate stucco work, scultures, paintings & ceiling frescos adorning this room.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer's monument
by magor65
Just in front of St. Elizabeth's church there is this interesting monument dedicated to Dietrich Bonhoeffer. D. Bonhoeffer was a german theologian born in Breslau ( German name of Wroclaw). He was a true advocate of the Jews. In fact his attempts to help a group of Jews to escape to Switzerland caused his imprisonment in 1943. He was hanged in the concentration camp in Flossenburg in 1945.
In Your Pocket Guide
by HORSCHECK
On my travels to East and Central Europe I always try to get myself the latest edition of the "In Your Pocket" guide. These guides are very up to date, provide useful maps and offer all sorts of information for independent travels. Most of the tips can also be found on their webpage.
I already got myself the Wroclaw guide on one of my previous trips to Poland when I was at the airport in Warsaw. So I am sorry that I don't know where you can buy the guide in Wroclaw. The price is only 5 Zloty (2004).
Chopin's monument
by magor65
F. Chopin gave a concert in Wroclaw in November, 1830. He was then just 20 years old and his fame was still to come. To commemorate the event and pay homage to this great composer, a monument of Chopin was unveiled in Southern Park in Wroclaw on September 5th, 2004. The local authorities are planning to start here summer concerts, just as it was in pre-war Breslau. Before the monument was transported to it destination, Chopin was driven around Wroclaw and stopped for a while in a market square to exchange greetings with another artist, A. Fredro.
The author of the monument placed the image of Virgin Mary with Holy Infant on Chopin's cloak. As he explained, Chopin was a religious man, although so influenced by George Sand that he didn't show his faith openly. The monument shows the great composer as a mature man, tired of life and the fight with disease. He is lost in thoughts or perhaps listening to music of his imagination.
Wroclaw Trams
by pieter_jan_v
Wroclaw has a dense tram network with frequent service. The trams are operated by the Miejskiego Przedsiêbiorstwa Komunikacyjnego (MPK). It struck me that some very old models were still in service; they looked like undestructable models ofRussian quality. New Skoda build 16T type trams that look futuristic have started service and a new batch is on order.
Riding the trams is cheap. For your convenience just buy a day ticket for PLN 10.00.
