THE COMMUNIST BAR

by cimber

I'm due to visit Wroclaw in June 2010.
Some friends have mentioned 'The Communist Bar' somewhere near the Rynek,
apparently it's lively & interesting but I have no details about location.
Also during my stay (Hotel Tumski) I would look for interesting bars in that vicinity.
Any suggestions ?
Best regards,
Tony D.

Hi Tony,
The real name of the bar you mean is 'PRL' (short for 'Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa' the official name of Poland during communistic times).

It is a nice bar directly at the main square around the city hall. At the square you will also find a lot of other bars and restaurants, full of people. Wroclaw is a super place - enjoy it!

Travel Tips for Wroclaw

Public art

by ZiOOlek

Wroclaw is full of public art. There are many sculptures, monuments or other examples of public art in the city. Some of them are unique, like the one in the picture - just some people standing in the pavement, waiting to cross the street, like passerby...

Architecture of Wroclaw

by HORSCHECK

Although about two-thirds of Wroclaw were destroyed after WWII in 1945, the city is nowadays rich in architectural styles from Gothic to 20th century architecture.
One building which I especially liked in Wroclaw is the main train station (Dworzec Glowny). It looks more like a fairytale castle than a train station.
It was constructed between 1854 and 1856 in Neo-Gothic style (Tudor Gothic). It was also affected by WWII but rebuilt and renovated afterwards.

Blocks

by Mikebond

In Wroc³aw you can see a lot of Soviet-style blocks like the one in this picture.
It is interesting to see that people often customize their flat, which results in a mix of colours, flowers, etc. Quite unusual!

by cheekymarieh

Oborniki Slaskie is a small town about 25 km north of Wroclaw and forms part of the foot hills of the Trzebnickie hills. There is some very picturesque scenery and some marked walks around the area. Some of my dearest Polish friends come from this town.

Bus&Tram

by wroclawiak

If you travel by tram or bus you have to pay extra for your oversized luggage.
(rucksacks, valise, etc.). You have to buy an extra ticket for your luggage. It costs 1 zl. (It's called - bilet ulgowy.)

Calculate before buying any bus/tram passes. One single journey costs from 2 to- 2.80 zl. (about 0.50 Euro Cent). Night buses are more expensive. (about 4zl -1Euro).
We don't have any zones. The single ticket is valid for one journey. If you change a bus or tram you have to cancel a new ticket again.

One day tram/bus pass costs 9 zl. (2004)

The tickets for trams and buses are the same. We have two types of buses.
Fast lines (marked with letters A, C etc.) cost more but they are as slowly and (un)confortabe as the other lines marked with numbers. Don't ask me why. I don't understand either.
If you find the accomodation in the center you don't need to use them.
