Just outside the walls
by acemj
Walk outside the Old Town walls on the southern end of town and you'll have a great view of the Vistula River running through Torun. This is Poland's mightiest river and it runs all the way through the country from north to south.
Gingerbread
by magor65
Gingerbread is no doubt the most famous product of Torun. These cookies made of flour, honey (no eggs!) and oriental spices such as ginger, cloves, cinnamon or nutmeg have been baked in Torun since Middle Ages. In those times there was the saying that the best vodka comes from Gdansk, the most beautiful maids from Cracow and the best gingerbread from Torun. I'm not sure about the first two, but Torun gingerbread still holds the victor's palm.
How did it all begin? The legend says that the first gingerbread was made by accident. A baker making bread added honey instead of water to the flour and the result was ... gingerbread.
Today it is the most popular souvenir from Torun. It comes in different shapes: hearts, carriages, townsmen. These big ones are for decoration rather than eating. But you can buy ones packed in boxes designed as houses (f.e. the house of Copernicus), and then you'll have both a souvenir and cookies.
Nice modern blocks
by sihi
City has lots of new modern flat houses. They are colourful and look very nice. Some of old blocks were rebuilt, renovated, now they are as modern houses. Just delight to look and to see. Positive colours are used. Some house is green, some yellow with orange or blue.
Adresses and numbers of the houses are wrote with a large symbols on the wall, so blind as a bat can see that.
Zoological museum
by sihi
Lovers of zoology can visit zoological museum in Torun. It really exists there.
Different birds, animals, insects, creepy-crawlies etc are exposed there.
Museum locates ~40 min walk from old town near the main building of Torun Copernicus University. Very ok to go there by a city bus.
Church of the Holy Spirit
by acemj
Torun is most well-known for its imposing brick, Gothic architecture, so seeing the pale colored 18th century Baroque Church of the Holy Spirit rising gracefully over the Old Town Square is a nice change of pace. It was originally built without the tower you see here, in 1745. It wasn't until 1899 that the tower was completed. Today, it is a Jesuit Church and is sometimes referred to as the academic church. Check out the main altar that dates from 1756.
