LODZ - ONCE A MELTING POT - A MULTICULTURAL MOSAIC Until the industrial revolution Lodz was just a small settlement surrounded by vast, wild forests. Due to its favourable position on the cross-roads to and from the Eastern market, in only a few decades the place became an important industrial centre, attracting investors from Germany, Austria, and Russia as well as thousands of peasants from the surrounding area who came here in search of employment. This period of Lodz's astonishing growth has been the subject of Andrzej Wajda's film 'The Promised Land'. For many years the city was a real melting-pot of different nationalities, most notably Poles, Jews and Germans, but also Russians and Czechs. This multicultural mosaic is still evident in the streets of Lodz, its architecture, and its cemeteries.

Furthermore, you can visit this trip on the part of a ghetto tour of the city. You can find more information at the tourist information or at this website. Entrance to the cemetry is four zlotys.
'Hortex'
by Wiktoria about 'Hortex'
My favorite feature of Hortex are the trees that were left growing inside of the cafe. The holes were cut out in the ceiling to accomodate the tree trunks. It's easy to spot this venue because you can see the trees growing out from the building when you're walking along Piotrkowska Street. all kind of desserts
The Zoo
by alancollins
I thought about going to the zoo on a warm Sunday morning but soon changed my mind when I saw the length of the queues. So I went the next day instead and it had much fewer visitors. I realise it is not to everyone’s taste but the animals looked well cared for. The zoo which opened in 1938 and covers an area of 16 hectares looks like it is undergoing some changes with new enclosures plus some of the older cages and enclosures were empty. The zoo opens daily at 0900 hours, it cost me 9 PLN to enter and I saw most of what was on offer.
Kindermann's Villa

Visit Kindermann's Villa - the ornate former residence of industrialist Leopold Rudolf Kindermann.
Built in 1903, a fine example of Art-Nouveau style architecture. The house features a large stained-glass window and now houses temporary art exhibitions.
