Budget Accommodation

by Poling

Have went through a lot of hostels, a private room for two costs at least 50euro. I believe the same price is good enough to stay in a hotel as well? Any hotel/hostel around the price could you recommend? The euro is 20% higher than the time I started planning for this trip.  I am okay with mix-dorm but my friend has never done that. Thanks.

Hi there
I stayed at Greg-Tom hostel which was booked online through hostels.com. I was travelling alone and found it to be centrally located with friendly staff. I believe they have 1 double room (with double bed) and the rest are dorms. The hostel is small and prices range from 23-35 USD per person which includes breakfast. I met lots of people there and enjoyed my stay!

I am at greg and tom hostel right this minute in a private room for 3 people for 200 ZLT which is about $90. For $30 each this is the nicest hostel I have ever seen, in fact, won hostelworlds "hostel of the year" in 2007. It is nicer then most hotels I have been to.

I stayed at the Wielopole which though a little more expensive was still good value for what was about at the time and handy in the centre.
Has nice single and twin and double rooms.

Travel Tips for Krakow

The Heart, Memory & Soul of Poland ~ Wawel

by Pawtuxet

It's all housed here. This castle seems to be the most cherished of all things in Poland. There is reverence when they speak of it... and you cannot leave without seeing it. The courtyard is a fantasy.... even in the pouring rain with which we were greeted. Miraculously some things were saved from the bombs of war...and this Wawel Castle and Krakow were blessed to be amongst that list of lucky places. They were meant to stand forever to carry the history and culture of the country. Small wonder it is now on the World Heitage list of places which will always be protected. You simply must see it.

CHURCH OF ST. BERNARD OF SIENA

by LoriPori

Walking on our way to the Jewish Quarter, Hans and I saw this most beautiful Church on ul. Bernardynska 2 Street. It was the CHURCH OF ST. BERNARD OF SIENA or KOSCIOL SW. BERNARDYNA.
The 17th century Baroque has a rich interior with many beautiful paintings. Also a noteworthy Gothic sculpture in the Chapel of St. Anna's.

Street Scene

by doogienj

The status symbolms of Polish youth is designer jeans and Puma sneekers. They have come a long way from communism:) If you're a man and want to fit into the street scene, get a clipper and shave your head. Half the city has already. If you're a woman and don't have blond hair, dye it blond or jet black, and get a pair of jeans with no back pockets.

Dress like a Pole!

by Kodi01

Pants with stripes! I was told I had to dress like a Pole, but I did not know what Maciek meant, could it be you have a pair of these pants in your closet? :o)

If not, you can buy some there..........hehe! Ok, I am joking, can u see Maciek in a pair of these? Or only folk bands?

I will never tell - top secret!

Unusual Franciscan Church & Wyspiansi's art

by Pawtuxet

You must seek out the Franciscan Church near the Market Square to examine and enjoy the wonderful stained glass art by Stanislaw Wyspiansi...one of Poland's favored artists. The windows are of particular interest because rather than to depict religious scenes...the artist chose to use flowers as his subjects. There are beautiful lillies and any number of Iris and Mallow...a beautiful variety of colors. (Mallow is what we call Holly Hocks) The church is well worth the visit for these windows...as well as other decorative arts.
I enjoyed watching the men restore the decorative painting at the ceiling of the church. High above on scaffolding these artists worked painstakingly to recreate the brilliance of the original decoration. Imagine being up on that scaffolding painting this sort of detailing. Amazing work.
