It is not easy, but try to get to the catacumbs of the Reformatow church - you need to convince the father from the convent, but its unique! I live, guide (Spanish, French) and work for a travel agency here (incoming). But I still rediscover the city: it is always changing! Now plenty of new hotels are being set up (the agency I work for edited a Hotel guide).

The most famous of all Poland's churches
by matcrazy1
One church, one Polish name: "Kosciol Mariacki" and hmmm... so many English names:
- Basilica of the Virgin Mary's
- St. Mary's Basilica
- Our Lady Church
OK, Basilica of the Virgin Mary's is located close to NE corner of the Main Market Square.
It has been traditionally the temple of choice of the city’s burghers. It also seems to be the most famous of all Poland's churches.
HISTORY AND ART
The Gothic edifice replaced its Romanesque predecessor by the end of the 13th century. In 1365 a chancel was added and soon its splendid big stained-glass windows, of which three are still in place, were ready as well. By the end of the 14th century the body of the church got the present form of a basilica.
The taller (81 m = 266 ft) of its two towers, with a fantastic Gothic spire of 1478 and a gold-plated crown of 1666, curiously belongs to the municipality and the Krakow signal is played from it every full hour.
The lower tower (69 m = 226 ft ), with the 1592 Renaissance roof, harbors bells. Two of them date back to the late 14th century. In the Baroque front porch of the mid-18th century one finds two early-Gothic holy-water basins.
The basilica of the Virgin Mary's is home to an unmatched giant Gothic altarpiece carved by great Veit Stoss between 1477 and 1489. In 1491 he also sculptured a stone crucifix that now is part of the late-Baroque altarpiece in the south aisle, and probably the magnificent huge crucifix above the nave as well.
Sepulchral monuments of the Krakow rich and worthy fill every corner of the basilica and its twelve chapels. Ornate stalls in the chancel appear an outstanding achievement of the early-Baroque woodwork. The wall-paintings by famous Jan Matejko date back to the 1888-1891 renovation. The treasure-house of the basilica of the Virgin Mary's is rich in priceless objects of art, including some 300 masterly embroidered ancient vestments.
Public toilets.
by breughel
I'm always surprised when American friends use the word "rest room" for places where on this continent we are not used to rest. In Poland they use the word "Toalety" or WC.
The triangle for men and the circle for women are special to Poland it seems. If anybody knows another country using these symbols please let me know.
There are public toilets in Krakow at the Wawel castle and in the Planty park.
At the Wawel Castle are two public toilets which are free. My photo shows the one at the arcaded courtyard at the exit towards the riverside (photo 1). Perfectly clean toilets and free "Toaleta Bezplatna" (photo 2) also for disabled.
In the Planty park are also some public toilets (photo 3). Signs in the park show the direction and the distance.
You have to pay at the lady before using them (0.5 PLN or 1 PLN).
East and West

Krakow was always located in European, catholic in its roots culture in contrast to Eastern Poland in the past (western Belarus and Ukraine now) belonged to Eastern Orthodox catholic culture.
Hmm... a lot of things changed in 1945 for over 40 years when Krakow and Poland was forced to join Soviet, communist bloc. It caused that we still have weak economy (yet!) although we had much stronger economy than say Greece or Spain before 1939.
But for visitors to Krakow it means that we are less expensive and that you can find some Eastern European culture items there as well - at least doing shopping at Cloth Hall. Look at... Russian style fat dolls sold there.

I live in Krakow but exactly in the district which is called Nowa Huta. It a half an hour from the centre (The Old City). My district was being built after the second World War as a completely new, socialist city. But don't be afraid, the architecture is really unique and interesting, especially in comparison to the centre of Krakow.
