Hello folks,

Is it possible to buy a Polski Fiat126P in Krakow for less than 5ooEur, or other reliable old car like (East German)TRABANT, (Russian)LADA Niva???
We need it for about 5000km trip around Black Sea in July.

Thanx in advance,

I'm afraid we can't call a Polski Fiat 126p a reliable car :-)

do you have personal bad experience, Anita?

Not me but my friends-do.Well, and the newest ones are 10 years old, what is a very mature age for it and for these 5000 km.You must probably take a lot of spare parts and be a kind of fan, who likes dealing with this kind of stuff on the road shoulder :-).
But if you insist, here's the website of "Polish e-bay" Good luck! :-)

Thanx a million, Anita,

You're helpfull, indeed.

In Israel I'm driving Daihatsu Applause model 1997, 30,000 km per year, and believe me, I'm totally in love with it, 100% trust.

Can you help me to find similar Bulgarian, Romanian, Ukrainian e-bay sites?? CLOSER TO Black-Sea.

Greetings from Jerusalem!
Avi

Avi - take your Daihatsu with you. The cars you are looking for are not reliable for your trip. People really hate them. An other problem is that in Eastern part of Europe there is no reliable used car market. You are more likely to get scammed and sold what you do not want to have. Illegal "kilometer-adjusting" is the least you can expect.

I changed my mind. The idea of buying old car is not working according to the answers I got in 2 sites, here and CouchSurfing.
And haven't yet found local - Bulgarian, Romanian - to join the trip and contribute his private car.

Also checked the price of bringing my car to Turkey - Antalia. It costs about 600x2US$. Not cheap at all.

toda,
Avi

Travel Tips for Krakow

UNESCO World Heritage

by tini58de

As you might know I love to visit UNESCO World Heritag Sites and Krakow is one of them! There are 3 more or less seperate areas that are worthwhile visiting: the area around the Rynek, the Wawel and Kazimierz, all within the historic center and easily done by walking!

This is the official brief description of the UNESCO committee:

"The historic centre of Cracow, the former capital of Poland, is situated at the foot of the Royal Wawel Castle. The 13th-century merchants' town has Europe's largest market square and numerous historical houses, palaces and churches with their magnificent interiors. Further evidence of the town's fascinating history is provided by the remnants of the 14th-century fortifications and the medieval site of Kazimierz with its ancient synagogues in the southern part of town, Jagellonian University and the Gothic cathedral where the kings of Poland were buried."

(quoted from the official UNESCO website) When I visited in 1983 I was enchanted by this wonderful city, so I had to return! In 2006 I went to Krakow again and this time my very personal highlight was meeting Karolina who in 2003 was the recipient of my bone marrow. It took over 2 1/2 years until we could finally get in touch with eachother and when I found out that she lived not far from Krakow we decided to meet! And what a wonderful meeting this was - I will never ever forget it!

Misterious Cathedral

by sihi

The cathedral dominating this spot used to be the place where the coronation of Polish kings was held; it was also their burial place.
That is misterious place. Entering to cathedral you will feel something ... you are arrived to old medieval time.

Krakowians are quite helpfull, i cant complain about anything... so many people speak english. Its so easy to go wherever speaking english (bars, restaurants). Krakow is becoming more and more touristy full of people from abroad and so so many young people. Sounds like a cool city to be a Erasmus student.. Everthing is at hand, short distance and so lively spots

Good place for movies

by Skeptic-jr

Krakow is very popular amongst film directors. They apparently like its unique atmosphere, great architecture, rich cultural traditions and important historical and political significance. Many movies were recorded here - both Polish and foreign.

Spielberg find in Krakow place for his "Schindler's List", Giacomo Batiatto - "Karol - Man who became the pope" (about JP2), Juliusz Machulski - "Vinci", and many many others...

It is not unusual to see in the streets movie team who just make a photo for their film.

Visit the Ghetto and Oskar Schindler's Factory

by indrei

If you have seen S. Spielberg's movie "Schindler's list" then a visit to Oskar Schindler's recently factory enamel-work factory just outside the walls of the war-time Jewish ghetto is a must. For 100 PLN (about Euro 25 - a beautiful horse-drawn carriage costs twice as much) we rented an electric golf-cart from Krakow's central square across the Vistula river into the old ghetto area (see the moving "ëmpty chair" memorial to its former inmates) and then through a decaying industrial area to the factory which became the pretext for Oskar Schindler saving hundreds of ghetto inmates from extermination in the nearby wartime deathcamps. There's a museum too, which we didn't have time to visit. On the return journey, ask your driver to show you the only remaining section of the former ghetto wall. Finish up with a visit to the synagogues and restaurants of Krakow's old Jewish quarter Kazimiercz, a stone's throwaway across the river on the way back to the center of Krakow.
