Apartment vs Hotel vs Hostel in Krakow

by RGR2626

My husband and I are making plans for our first trip to Krakow. We will be there for 8 days in July and don't know where to stay. I like the idea of staying in the old town area. We don't want to spend a fortune, but we also want a nice place. Are the apartments a better deal than the hotels? We want access to laundry machines, wifi and a double bed (bigger if possible).
We don't speak Polish, so a place with English-speaking hosts would be great.
Also, what are hostels like for middle-age couples - anything cater to this age-group?
All suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

the apartment route is the cheapest.....even in the old town....but you can find really amazing deals further out.....the kazimierz area is still a historic area and cheaper than old town....the trick is to find a place further out but right on the tram line....so that you can get to the old town quickly....just google krakow apartments

As a sort of in-between you could try the Greg and Tom Hostel which is in the middle of the old town, almost next to the railway station. Whilst it has the normal dorm-type rooms it also has a foor which is like a shared apartment with three rooms sharing a kitchen/lounge. Laundry machine, computer, tea, coffee etc as well as breakfast are included. Some well-travelled friends (who are "of a certain age") stayed there last year and reckoned it was one of the best places they have ever stayed. Website is www.gregtomhostel.com

Sounds exactly what you are looking for.

Enjoy Krakow!

a hostel is not really an option when you want abig bed and some comfiness. Kazimierzin definitely NOT cheaper than the old town area - that is years ago. there are a number of well located apartment, not all of them come cheap but as far as fortune goes, it depends on how much you are willing to spend. An apartment definitely comes cheaper than one of the posher hotels. if you try to find old town apartments - they have a Krakow deoendence as well - the people who rent the apartments speak English. Also, try the accomodation section of the online edition of the "in your pocket" guideof Krakow - they list hotels, apartments and hostels there, including webstes, if available. might be the best option to compare prices and what you get for your money. and it is in English

Travel Tips for Krakow

Beautiful Rynek Glowny...

by coceng

Krakow's Market Square (Rynek Glowny) consists within an area of 200m X 200m.
It is the largest town square in Poland & being tipped as so, in Europe as well !
It's layout was first drafted in 1257 & has been retained to this day, although some buildings have been changed over the course of the last few centuries...

A Stroll In The Park...

by coceng

Wandering around Krakow is the best way to explore & see some sights not included in guidebooks or tourist brochures.
Sit on a bench in a park, watching the people, the world gone by.
Krakow is surrounded with small parks that you wouldn't miss upon entering the enclosure of the Old Town.

Stag parties etc

by jo104

This tip is based on my personal observation of my extended weekend in Krakow, it is not my intention to offend anyone.

I noticed that the especially on the weekend evenings there are big groups of drunken men loitering around the market square and surrounding areas. I presume that Krakow has now become the place to go for "stag" weekends. Please aim to be a considerate traveller and not a drunken reveller.

I had the unfortunate experience of coming across a group of drunken English men who were vomiting in the market square and generally acting like idiots. We heard from several local people about their dislike for this sort of unruley behaviour and how the Polish people cannot tolerate these drunken louts. One girl had her coat taken by an Englishman who thought it would be a joke for her to leave the club in the cold with no jacket, it was returned to her the next day. I changed out of my South African rugby jersey after watching the RWC final in fear of abuse.

Please bear in mind that your behaviour reflects on the country you come from, that goes for each country not just England. Also there appears to be a strong armed police presence around Krakow so you may not want to step too far out of line.

A lot of fun with... pigeons

by matcrazy1

You can feed hundreds, thousands of pigeons of Krakow! It's a lot of fun not exclusively for kids and their parents. They used to sit on your hands, arms even on your head and eat directly from your hands.

Be careful, they love to... read in my Warnings Or Dangers tips, please hehe.

An ice cream

by 68maciek

This is something only for locals not for loaded tourists.I wouldn't remember about it unless I had just eaten this ice cream.
This is the real ice cream not junk food from Nestle or Algida. You can buy it after staying in a long queue but it takes only 5 minutes.
The place 'lody' is located just near Kazimierz on Starowislna 83.You pay per 1 'galka' 1.20PLN.The interior is from 70-ties.The taste is wonderfull.
