Chopin Hotel Cracow: Functional, affordable but grey

Hotel Chopin in ul. Przy Rondzie is a pleasant walking distance from the centre of Kraków so it was nice to have a bit of a traipse through beautiful tree lined Mikolajka Street, passing the various university faculties and botanical gardens. The hotel is a new addition to the Vienna International Group although I would have expected someone to notice the grey cement façade and consider painting it. Similarly, the décor within left a lot to be desired. It looks to me like it hadn't been changed since the late 1970s or 80s what with the shocking patterned bottle green carpeting in the halls and violent vomit orange in the bedrooms. Aside from that, it was clean everywhere and quiet which is the main thing! The breakfast was more than reasonable although why you would choose to have your overpriced evening meal in such drab surroundings is mystifying - although many (older) guests did. The hotel staff were very very helpful and friendly. The hotel also offer to arrange day trips to Wieliczka Salt Mine and/or Auschwitz but it might be considerably cheaper to organise this yourself.
