Krakow airport to center of town (Powisle)

by nomad7890

I thought I had posted but cannot find the info. I have been looking thru the VT pages as well as http://www.krakow-info.com/airport.htm, and getting from the airport to Powisle Street:

The website above states "A single ticket costs an equivalent of under two euros. One can can purchase tickets on the train. It departs from a stop some 300 meters from the International Terminal T1 "

(1) is it pretty obvious to figure out where this train is?

(2) *** Is the station and train OK for a woman alone to hang out in, or would it be just better to take a taxi?

(3) Assuming I do take the train to Glowny Stacja PKP ... it looks like it will be around (give/take) 4 kilometers from my destination. Is it easy to catch a taxi from the Glowny Station?

Thanks!

Krakow airport is located 15 km from Powisle. It will take you about 20 min by taxi and cost somewhere around $23.
Sure you can take a train or bus but you will have to walk about 2 km. If you take a taxi from Central train station to Powisle the driver will have to go around Old Town and it would cost you $5-10.
Train is located 200 m from terminal, you can walk 5 min or use free shuttle. Ticket cost 6 zl and it takes 15 min to get to the Central station.
Train leaves airport about once an hour.

The airport indeed operates a free shuttle bus for the 250m or so to the station from arrivals and there are signs for this. There are also signs for the bus into the city (you'll need another ticket for your bag on this bus).

Both train and bus are entirely safe for single females. I took both options when I visited. You won't have any problems.

You could take a taxi all the way but you could equally well either walk from the station (perfectly safe, and would be interesting in the daylight) or get a taxi from there.

Krakow is a lovely city: enjoy your visit!

Travel Tips for Krakow

Where to go in Kraków?

by pieter_jan_v

Finding your way at Kraków is easy. There are many maps and sign all over downtown.

The Main Kraków attractions are:
-Royal castle on the Wawel hill
-Central Market square or Rynek Glówny with the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice)
-St. Mary's church
-Jewish quarter or the Kazimierz suburb
-St. Florian's Gate and the Barbican

Trips to attractions out of town:
-Schindler factory (South across the river)
-Wieliczka Salt Mine
-Auschwitz at Oswiecim

Barbakan

by johnsakura

Built in 1489-1499 as an additional protection of the gate and the town arsenal adjoining the walls. The Barbican was constructed on the near circular plan and the walls are dotted with openings for cannon barrels.

PORTER gorgeous dark beer.

by breughel

Usually I write on VT about museums and monuments. For Krakow I started my comments with one of the best beers I did drink in my life!

I discovered the gorgeous dark beer called PORTER from the Okocim brewery when having lunch at the restaurant Europejska located on the north-west corner of the Rynek Glowny market.
This beer tastes like a somewhat sweet Guinness or one of these dark Belgian Monks beers.
They serve it in bottles of 50 cl and it has 8,6° alcohol content!

There is also a PORTER beer from the Zywiec brewery. Has a slightly bitter taste and 9° alcohol.

All Fools’ Day

by matcrazy1

All Fools’ Day? What's that? Are you crazy? Does it mean that you support fools?
Hmm... not at all. Fools don't need a special day, they give much support everyday haha (sorry, it was about some politicians - strictly forbidden on VT).

All Fools’ Day on April 1 or "prima aprilis" is universally observed in Poland: expect endless pranks, jests, and innocent lies.

Only in this day you can lie your boss (or being lied if you are a boss). But if you want to say your boss what you think about him read my tip on gambling before :-).
Better do not go to any office that day.

Discover Podgorze

by akselek

Most tourists make it from the old town of Krakow to the Jewish district of Kazimierz - and back. Why not walk on a bit, cross the Wisla river and find yourself in Podgorze? That's a beautiful quarter with nice old houses which has this special touch of not yet being discovered by tourists. My personal highlight is the St. Joseph's Church (Kosciol sw. Jozefa) at the market place of Podgorze (Rynek Podgorski). It's a beautiful building - but you'll hardly find it in any guidebook. Prolong your walk and "climb" the hill called "Kopiec Krakusa". You'll have a nice yet distant view of the whole city!
