    Hostel in Kazimzierz

Finding good value accommodation in Krakow is difficult, especially in the centre of town. We eventually settled on Goodbye Lenin, a hostel in Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter.

After we arrived in Krakow we picked up a map at the station and walked to the hostel. It's about 10 minutes walk from the station and it's fairly easy to find, in a small courtyard near the railway line.

It's a very cool place. There is a bust of Lenin wearing sunglasses in the entrance and the sign on the street outside has a very cool looking picture of the man himself. I wonder if the inspiration for the hostel name was the same as for the German movie of the same name.

Our room wasn't ready but we checked in and paid our bill and left our bags there. A very friendly Polish girl called Anna was in charge. After she saw my passport she mentioned she was planning to emigrate to Ireland for a year after University. She also invited us to a free barbecue later that evening in the courtyard of the hostel.

We got back to the hostel later that evening and finally checked in. There was another girl on duty and she showed us to our rooms and also gave us a tour, showing us the free internet room, the breakfast area, the kitchen, the free laundry and the bar. This seems like a great place to stay for a week, what a pity we were only staying for one night!

We went outside and joined in the free barbecue. The people were friendly and one of them told us how to pronounce Zywiec (the beer) properly. There were lots of people there, including an English couple, a Polish couple with a baby and many more at the next table who we didn't meet.

Our room was quite nice though we were sharing shower and bathroom with a few other rooms. All in all Good Bye Lenin is a friendly place and not too badly priced (at 55 Zl for a double) given its good location.
