I'm assuming you've read your repies in the Misc forum.

But I'm copying my answer here, for other people to see if they are searching for info:

Here's the train timetable for Krakow>Oswiecim:

(check times when you are there, as they may change).

You can get a bus from the train station to the camp, or walk (about 20 minutes).

Or (probably easier) you can take a bus direct from Krakow (bus station is next to the train station). These run fairly frequently: the TI office will tell you the timetable/fare.

The salt mines are also easy to get to: they are only about 7 miles from the city. Again, you have the option of bus or train (or tour, or even taxi).

Travel Tips for Krakow

If you stay four to six days...

by Eberhard

If you stay four to six days in Krakow, I recommend buying a Tourist card for $ 32, which gives you a free public transportation in the city, free entrance in public museums and other reductions
Krakow city
Buy a guidebook and walk through the old city. Highlights are
- The huge market place with it’s buildings
- The castle
- The old University

Auschwitz and Birkenau
I strongly recommend reading some literature (if you did not yet) about the “Judenvernichtung” in the Third Reich (Germany under Hitler’s NAZI party from 1933 to 1945). You should do this well before you go. I read and knew a lot before, but to see what is remaining is another thing. Still, the crimes remain so unimaginable..
There are many trains and busses to go there. Prefer private bus lines.

Salt mines
Are worth a visit. There are always guided tours (as you cannot visit the mines alone), but maybe in polish language)
Busses are going there all ten minutes from the main bus station.
Takes about 3 hours with a private bus line. The whether was so horrible as I went, that I have nothing much to tell. It is the whole old city and the atmosphere.

Another one of many tapestries adorning Krakow & at Wawel Castle...
At some of the souvenir shops around Krakow & Wawel Castle, we can actually buy some small prints or replicas of these tapestries.
Some are printed in postcard forms & we could get the whole collections of these beautifully woven tapestries from the collections of King Sigismund Augustus, from the 16th century.

Sigismund Augustus Tapestry Collections
The above link is a good website where you can see the collections of these tapestries, but it's in German.

car parking

by DPando

Park the car in Krakow its not a hard game. my best advice is to check with your hostel or hotel if its legal or not to park at any place... i did and they suggested me to park in other place behinf the train station ..
Old town is other thing.. you have to pay if u want to park there but its not the best because the city is so small to have to pay .

There are a lot of flowers growing in public areas around Krakow historic old town. Lawns are usually well maintained there in contrast to suburbs with huge apartment buildings where often nobody cuts the grass.

There are a lot of flowers growing in Planty garden - a green belt around the old town and at Wawel Hill.

People used to grow flowers in their frontyards and put them in windows of their houses as well recently.

The 'new' cemetery

by leics

Hidden away to the east of Kazimierz lies the 'New' Jewish cemetery. To find it, walk along Ul. Miodowa until the junction with Ul. Starowilsna. Cross the road and follow Ul. Miodowa under a narrow railway bridge (watch for cars). Cemetery is on the right.

In the early 1800s this took over from the cemetery at the Remuh synagogue but was full by the early 20th century, when a new burial ground was used in Plaszow.

It is a quietly overgrown place, its headstones ranging from the worn and broken to the brand new Holocaust memorial stones placed by family members.

I found it a good place to contemplate what had happened.

And I read this:

To say goodbye
it blesses you and me.
To turn again,
to wave again....
The distance grows
we shrink...
Wave again
at the empty space
