One of the best hotels I've stayed in
by ozpaul about Ester Hotel Krakow
From the very first minute you enter this hotel, the service is exceptional. The staff are very friendly and will organise tours for you. The rooms are quite spacious and are very clean. I would definitely stay here again. Located in a quiet square - our flight left very early in the morning. They even organised a take away breakfast for us!! Fabulous restaurant down stairs in the hotel!!
Spartan hotel in great location
by doogienj about Alef Hotel
The hotel I stayed in is not the more well know Alef in the old Jewish part of town. But the Alef 2 which is a 5 minute walk to the Jewish section, and 10 minutes to the main Market Square. The location is great, and sits on a quiet little street.
The city does not have a huge selection of chain hotels, except Sheraton, Radisson, and Holiday Inn. If you want to stay close to Market Square you have many choices including all of the above mentioned, and the Hotel Royal. If you want to stay in the old Jewish section (my favorite) of town Hotel Ester is a 3-star with a great location. The room was very spartan and felt almost more like a dorm room than a hotel room. The bed was not very comfortable. The sheets didn't feel dirty, but not clean either.
The staff of the hotel were super nice and friendly. A nice breakfast buffe is included in the price. If you need an important wakeup call, you better bring an alarm. Twice I ordered wakeup calls and didn't get them.
The public areas of the hotel are really nice. The lobby is very unique and filled with art work, as are the staircases. The huge breakfast room is filled with eclectic prewar WW2 Jewish pieces that transports you back in time.

brief visit to Krakow - end Jan 09
by lindseyr
we are visiting Krakow for the weekend of 31st January - having never been there before can anyone advise on weather (I so hope it will be snowing) and what to do - our friends are visiting Auschwitz but hubby and I would rather explore Krakow. Will be staying at Hotel Ester - any advice, hints, tips would be great. Also what is cost of eating out (rough guide).
Thanks

Good site for Krakow weather forecast here:
http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/europe_forecast_48hrs.asp?locationID=2708
Or the BBC, of course:

Take your thermals& keep your fingers crossed for snow!
I found eating out to be a little cheaper than the UK (I'm guessing that's where you are from, because of the languge you have used....sorry if I'm wrong). Do try the Georgian 'fast food' too: there are a couple of places just off Rynek Glowny.
Krakow is a lovely and fascinating city. Make sure you allow plenty of time to explore Kazimierz, the Jewish quarter (some extremely moving museums and memorials) and to explore the castle, cathedral side-streets and churches. Even (or especially?) in snow, a walk around the perimeter of the old city (where the city walls once stood) in what is now the Planty gardens will be enjoyable.
I have information, photos and tips on my VT Krakow pages.
Try the flavoured vodkas too.....cherry is particularly warming on a chilly day! :-))

Visit Wavel Hill and especially the cathedral. The city is really lovely and a visit to Zakopane which is a sking resort just outside of Krakow is worth seeing. A very picturesque village. Also the Kazimirez district of the City is worth seeing. Schindlers list was filmed in this area!!
