If it keeps raining, will there likely be train cancellations to Krakow

by budapest8

I'm planning to come from Budapest with the direct night train on Thursday 27th May, leaving Budapest Keleti Railway station 19.58 Euro Night EN 476 arriving Krakow Glowny 06.24 next morning. Unfortunately MAV (Hungarian Railways hopeless with international train info so maybe if any Slovaks,Czechs or Polish reading this might let me know? There are no cheap flights to Krakow from Budapest and I don't have a car. The weather report says weather will be highs of +20 to +23 the coming days and cloudy then lots of rain next weekend.
For general info my return ticket without couchette costs about 15,500 Huf, thats 55 Euro or 70 USD
My travel day is also my birthday, so do hope not to get stuck somewhere..:)

Saw this news report with English subtitles...looks like there gotta be some damage to railway lines in the region.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNdvwAJLkF0

I am going by car, BTW. And so far only one potential passenger, but she did not confirm it 100%
Most likely I am going from BP via Ukraina, would like to see Uzhgorod and also running some minor errands. I think I will depart very early May 28.

I googled weather forecaste for Krakow and it shows sunny and cloudy tomorrow then rain and showers for the next 10 days...judging by the last 2 weeks here, this could be true sadly.Lets hope the forecaste is wrong..:)

Tim, the situation now is much better and no train is cancelled, they also are back to their normal routes. The forecast says that from Tuesday it should be sunny so I think not a reason to worry, you'll be on time in Krakow.

Oh my, we were so lucky to have the meeting right between the two floods with everything being all right. When I left on Thursday the river was already rising again. Current news sound terrible. All my best wishes to the people who have to cope with this mess.

Travel Tips for Krakow

Tourist signs

by ZiOOlek

Krakow is quite well signed and probably if you are looking for some monument or the way to most important places you will notice signes and you may fallow. In adittion, you may take a map from the City Tourist Information Centre and you won't lose your way. The map of the city centre is free of charge, as in most cities.:)

by Tolik

visit Kosciol Mariacki (St. Mary's Church) on the Market Square. From it's higher tower, a strange caal known as Hejnal Mariacki, rings out to mark each hour. It breaks off on an abrupt sobbing note to commemorate an unknown trumpeter struck in the throat by a Tartar arrow as he was playing his call to warn the city of imminent attack. The church has wonderful wooden altarpiece with more than 200 carved figures.

Lajkonik

by ZiOOlek

Lajkonik is a man in Tatar disguise riding a hobby-horse. A fairytale figure in traditional Tatar dress, beautifully embroidered, "perched" on a little wooden horse, the figure dances, jumps and parades through the streets of Cracow and if you are lucky you may see its show.:) Miniature figures of the Lajkonik are available daily to buy on the Main Square.

The Polish don't always speak...

by helimaarit

The Polish don't always speak English. Actually they rarely speak English. But it is not a problem. I spoke with an older lady for 15 minutes. She spoke Polish, I spoke Finnish. And we had a very nice conversation.

Trip to Auschwitz

by Roadquill

You can drive, take a bus or join a tour, but at some time in your life you need to have the horror of Auschwitz shoved in your face. This is a gut wrenching experience. From entering the camp under the famous sign "work will set you free", noting the experiences, the buildings, the execution wall.... the gas chamber... this is a reality check. The positive note, since I was with a group of people from all over the world, it is reassuring we can exist and enjoy one another no matter what walk of life or ethnic background.
