3* close to the train station and old town
Fortunately for me I waited long enough to book a hotel that I got someone else to do all the research for me (thanks Ed!) so I booked the Hotel Matejko which turned out to be perfectly fine for what we needed and well located near the train station and a short walk from old town. An added bonus was that the VT group for Saturday's excursion left right from the plaza outside our hotel.
We booked the hotel via Expedia for $85 per night including tax although there was a small city tax due upon checkout.
Unique Quality: Hotel Matejko is a small 45 room hotel plus three suites. Our room was comfortable and came with a TV but no room safe or refrigerator/mini bar.
The bathroom had a shower but no tub, plenty of hot water. The toiletries weren't much, just soap and shampoo. If you need a hair dryer you can check one out from the reception desk for the duration of your stay.
Breakfast is included in the rate and included meat, cheese, bread, cereal, yogurt, juice, tea and coffee

Nice, clean and comfortable hotel for spending good days in Krakow. Sitted in Plac Matejki, is close by Main Square and all touristic attractions.

Excellent Location
Nice, clean hotel that benefits from an excellent location five minutes walk from the main square and only a little further to the train and bus station. Service was of an acceptable standard although we did have to ask three times for extra pillows! Staff friendly. Non-smoking hotel.

Two years ago my husband and I stayed at the hotel Batory and liked it very much. English speaking staff, excellent breakfast, really large room and not expensive at all! I can really recommend it.

I suggest you look at the hotels offered by Easyjet (link on www.easyjet.com). I have used them on several occasions, and have neither found a better rate for the hotel nor been disappointed. do check the location though; some are quite a way outside the cities.

I was really pleased with the Hotel Matejko which you can book through Hotels Poland . com. It was pretty cheap and benefited from a really excellent location - five minutes walk from the main square. A nice clean hotel and good value for money. The hotel is 100% non-smoking though so if you or your wife are smokers then you have to go down to the lobby for a ciggy!
