we are going to krakow in june. we stay Ul.Szeroka. What's the nearest bus stop to get to Auschwitz . What times are the buses ( we intend going morning)

Re: krakow

by Rosstipha

Not sure about buses (most hotels use local travel agents that do day trips) but you can get the train from Krakow's central (Krakow Glowny) to Oswiecim (Auschwitz) every couple of hours.

You can walk around Auschwitz for free but I would recomend taking a guide or joining a group as you learn a lot more.

Travel Tips for Krakow

To understand Krakow, you have...

by DrewV

To understand Krakow, you have to listen to the hejnal (pronounced 'hey now'). In the thirteenth century, Krakow was the capital of a Poland threatened by enemies on all sides. Well, one day, a wild pack of Tatars came flying across the plain on a path to ravage and pillage. The watchman on the top of St. Mary's church saw the oncoming horde and blew his trumpet in warning. In the middle of his tune, a Tatar archer let fly an arrow, which pierced the hapless trumpeter in the throat, right in the middle of a note. The watchman did not die in vain, however, as the city's forces were able to man the defenses in time and turn away the assault.

These lovely details in Kanonicza St.

by gosiaPL

Kanonicza is one of the oldest Krakow streets and it has many beautiful portals and their styles vary from gothic to renaissance to baroque. Take a walk there and explore...

This is a close-up on the details of one of the portals. Uhmm.. the details..? ;-)

You have no choice.....

Thanks to VT member HORSCHECK I was prepared, otherwise I would have been quite lost !

The toilet signs in some places are different from what I have seen in other countries, where you have some sort of male and female figures to show which door is "your" door. In Krakow you will often find only symbols, and that is a little tough to figure that out. So here is the solution:

the circle is for ladies

the triangle is for men

If you know it, it's easy!

Krakow Hourly Trumpet Signal

by matcrazy1

Every full hour a golden trumpet shows above Krakow’s Main Market Square in the west window just below the spire of the higher, municipal tower of the Basilica of the Virgin Mary's.

Then a characteristic trumpet signal, known and dear to every Pole, resounds all over the city’s Old Town historical district. All of a sudden the melody comes to an abrupt end. Next it is played towards the east, the south and the north. At noon the whole ritual is broadcast by the Polish radio first programme. The Krakow signal, or Hejnal Mariacki, dates back to the Middle Ages when it was announcing the opening and the closing of the city gates. The bugler also played it to alarm his fellow citizens whenever he saw a fire or the enemy forces. And the melody abrupt ending is said to commemorate a bugler shot through his throat by a Tatar archer in 1241.

I love trumpet sound (and traditional jazz) and this short signal, too. Do you like it?

Schindler's List Courtyard

by barryg23

The film Schindler's List was filmed in Krakow and there are even Schindler's List tours covering sites used in the movie. When we were exploring Kazimierz we passed through this small street which seemed familiar to me from the movie. I checked this when we got back and it was indeed used in a few scenes. It’s one of the nicest streets in Kazimierz and connects Jozefa to Meiselsa.
