accessible /disabled toilets

by wheeliewoman

Going to Poland for the first time to celebrate my friends wedding. As a full time electric wheelchair user (can't stand or walk at all) I am a bit concerned about being able to "spend a penny". Anyone know if / where the accessible (disabled) toilets are in Krakow and Warsaw?

I guess it's no problem at airports and in big shopping centers. I know Galeria Krakowska in Kraków, next to the railway station has got one for sure. I don't know about Warsaw, but as for the old town in Krakow I'm afraid you're going to have some problems. Unfortunately not all places are accessible to disabled people not to mention lack of accessible toilets. But that's slowly changing.

Travel Tips for Krakow

This remarkable city, contains...

This remarkable city, contains some great art works, and has also preserved its historical center in fantastic condition. A visit to the Wawel Hill is certainly a must, also the small market square area, with its cafes and stores is very charming. I was most impressed with the food in this city, I must say, I did not know, how good Polish food was. I also had a great opportunity in Krakow, to go to the Opera, the program was 'Carmen' by Bizet. I also went to a Concert. Both of these shows were priced quite reasonable.

Dominating the Main Square, the BASILICA OF THE HOLY VIRGIN MARY or KOSCIOL MARIACKI, was constructed from 1287 - 1320 on the site of a former Romanesque Church which was destroyed by the Tartans. It was built originally in the Gothic Style, with Baroque Chapels and altars.
The two towers of the Church differ in height and style. The higher one is 88 m (the lower 69 m) and when built, did not belong to the Church but was under municipal management. It served as the city guard tower, where lookouts watched over the countryside. When a horn was blown from the tower, this was a signal to shut the gates against approaching enemies. This horn signal is called the Hejnal. Today it is heard every hour from the tower.
For our VT Meet, the Basilica of the Holy Virgin Mary was part of our Medieval Walking Tour. We entered from Mariacki Square at which point you buy your entrance tickets.

Foood ;)

In my opinion, it is something like custom for Polish people to eat much food. It looked like that for me, as food portions are bigger and you won't be hungry there. I dont know much traditional Polish food - tried bigos - thats peaces of saussages with dried cabbage. What is more, I tried saussages called "Kabanosi" - thats good one!. I saw, they like eating biscuits (small breads) with milk and with different types of jam.

Let's meet... under the knife

by matcrazy1

My and my friends favourite meeting point is "under the knife". There is a knife hanging on a wall (vault) of the Cloth Hall, in its transverse passage on a gate to eastern side of the Main market Square (Rynek Glowny), that is opposite to Mickiewicz monument.

The knife was... stolen many times as some students believed it gave people happiness and prosperity. Hmm... I am not sure. Last time we met just there with other VT-ers. It seems that it's favourite place for pigeons as well - look at my picture.

Podgorze: The Nazi ghetto

by gmg61

I found very interesting the visit also the area of the former ghetto, in Podgorze, on the bank of the river Vistula, directly across the traditional Jewish district of Kazimierz.
In an area inhabited by approximately 3.000 people were forced to move and acco, odate, 12.000 Jews or more. From March 21st, 1941 the Jews were unable to leave the Ghetto precinct and Jews started to be deported to Plaszow, or Auschwitz or other camps.
In the former ghetto area you can still see the old "Pharmacy Under The Eagle", that was the only pharmacy open in the ghetto; but the owner (Tadeusz Pankiewicz) provided illegally inhabitants with shelter, food and forged documents and saved many liveds. It's located in Plac Bohaterow Ghetta (once Plac Zgody), that was the only open space of the ghetto, and were the Nazis gathered thousands od people for selections and dispatch to the death camps.
Fragments of the ghetto wall can also be seen, between 25 and 29 Lwowska Street and at 62 Limanowskiego Street, today a children playground behind a school.
