Krakow to Piwniczna

by CabinEssence

My wife and I will be in Krakow this November. We are interested in traveling from Krakow south to Piwniczna. Is there a train that runs continuously to Piwniczna and back? We are not fluent Polish speakers, is this something we should take into consideration? Other possible cities we would like to visit are Siemeichow and Szedzisow. Are these locations possible when traveling from Krakow? Language barrier problems?

There doesn't seem to be a direct train from Krakow to Piwniczna you have to change to a bus at Nowy Sacz. Here's the PKP timetable search page - http://rozklad-pkp.pl/?q=en/node/143

You'll find there's three trains per day with a journey time of over 4 hours. I'm not sure whether the fare quoted (27 Zloty) includes the bus fare.

If you're not comfortable with your Polish you can buy train tickets from the Orbis office on Krakow's main square. Staff are multi-lingual and can advise as to timings and routes. They charge a small commission but at least you'll know you've got the right ticket.

You don't have to be fluent Polish speakers to make yourself understood but it does help if you have some basics and take a travel dictionary with you to decipher menus etc.

You can go directly from Krakow to Sedziszow by train, it takes about 2 hours.
I can't find any connection to Siemiechow, is this spelling right?

ORBIS don't sell train tickets anymore. Actually, they have some troubles with their travel offices lately so I'm afraid they won't help. But you should have no problem with communication in English at Krakow's train station.

Looks like I'll have to update my Krakow Orbis tip - tx for the info.

It's a piece of cake. Take a direct bus (once/twice a day) or get to New York -I mean Nowy (New) Sacz (plenty of buses) and take a frequent bus (public/minibus). You can also get to Nowy Sacz by train- but it takes longer.

Travel Tips for Krakow

Communist Legacy

by antistar

Unlike Warsaw, there isn't a lot of brutalist communist legacy architecture on show in Krakow, but there are a few great examples, like the wonderful Jubilat building pictured. I didn't have time, but if I came back I'd take a trip out to Nowa Huta (New Steelworks) a planned socialist workers utopia with fantastic examples of social realist architecture.

Piegeons

by ZiOOlek

Pigeons are everywhere in Krakow but especially on the main market square (Rynek Glowny) and many of them in Kazimierz. Everywhere where are tourists are pigeons as tourists usually feed them. Krakow's pigeons are really friendly and they even eat from peoples' plams.

OBWARZANKI KRAKOWSKIE

by LoriPori

Throughout Krakow but mostly in the Old Town Center, you will see many vendors selling the locals' favourite snack OBWARZANKI KRAKOWSKIE which is a giant bread Pretzel with various coatings including salt, poppy seeds and sesame seeds. The portable carts are everywhere and they are stacked full of these delicious and filling snacks. Most sell for 1.50 zl
I had a couple and enjoyed them very much, especially when they are fresh.

How to get an identification card

by Jarra

You can`t buy tickets to football matches or even enter the Cracovia football stadium without identification cards. These cards are free. You can get the identification cards at Cracovia headquarters. For identification card you need also a photo. The headquarters are open from Monday to Friday 9-17. Because I arrived to Krakow late Friday night and I was therefore unable to get the identification card in normal way I contacted the Cracovia club beforehand. I sent the photo and all the information needed to the club before and they prepared the card for me. I picked it up from the club shop (on the same building than headquarters) at Saturday. The shop is open from Monday to Friday 9-18.30 and from Saturday to Sunday 10-15. Tickets you can buy either from the shop or at the stadium gates (only in cash). The Cracovia headquarters was hard to find so better use a taxi.
