AT THE FOOT OF THE CASTLE

So what is the ‘Pod’ like? The most striking thing is that this hotel sits virtually on top of the Castle and no other hotel is near it. This gets a bit stranger. You can sit on the rooftop bar and look right over the castle. You would think that this place would be very expensive, that the bar would stay open late and be very busy with sightseers. You would be wrong. Pod Wawelem was built during the Communist era when the ideas of commercial advantage were unknown. In fact VT Member ‘Matcrazy’ used to attend workshops here during those times. The expensive 4-5 star hotels that say they have great views and are close to the Castle are visible in the distance. Having said that the ‘Pod’ was built to be a basic hotel.

I took advantage of their ‘Economy Rate’ which is a bit hard to get from them except via email. Which they may not respond to. When I checked in they gave me a standard room with 2 beds, nice closets and good facilities in the room. The ‘Economy’ surprise awaited me when I got into the shower the next morning. No soap! And when I got out – no towels! Yes that was the ‘Economy’. Fortunately I had some soap (always pack some) and the sheets on the unused bed actually made a great towel. Dried quickly too.

They have some interesting offers including probably the only ‘All Inclusive’ deals in Krakow. You get all the food and alcohol you want included in the price. I saw their restaurant/food and throw in the alcohol and you might be onto a good deal.

Overall the beds were ok, staff friendly enough and it was clean. Also well located in the old town. Not a bad overall choice if you take the economy deal and have your own towel or substitute!

Unique Quality:
• Closest hotel to the Castle and overlooks the Vistula River
• Great Old Town location
• Good rate on economy rooms
• All Inclusive deals – all you can eat and drink (alcohol as well)
• Terrace Bar overlooking the Castle (not open late though)
• Kid, Pet and Gay friendly. Not necessarily all at the same time.
• Very good business/conference facilities
• Quiet at night

Great Location!

We stayed in this well appointed hotel for 2 nights. The staff were very obliging - it is well worth arranging your transfer to and from the airport with them. A clean, new hotel - air conditioned. Good buffet breakfast.

Good value

Unique Quality: Situated right next the the Wawel Castle and the river Wisla

Great for the Price

Stayed 2 nights, staff was polite and helpful. They spoke English and very easy to converse with. Food in restaurant was good and priced fairly

Unique Quality: Great view, right on the Vistula River and under the Wawel Royal Castle. Easy access to all tourist sights. Within walking distance to Stare Miasto.

More about Pod Wawelem Hotel

Piwo Gratis - Free Beer!

by johngayton

If you come across this bubbly-headed guy here in Krakow give him a smile and you'll get a voucher for a free beer!

This is one of these "buy one get one free" offers with the voucher valid for the bar at the Pod Wawelem Hotel and I reckon actually is well worth taking up. The Pod Wawelem Hotel is the one on the corner at plac Na Groblach at the town side of the bottom of Wawel Hill.

I never did take it up myself, despite getting my voucher (which is only valid on the day and between certain hours). Unfortunately the timing didn't fit my day's agenda but it seemed straight forward enough and the beer you would have to pay for was a very reasonable 5.50 (if I remember correctly) Zloty.

The restaurant under the Castle

by Bushman23 about Pod Wawelem

Definitely the best place we ate at - If not just because of the incredible service (unusual in Poland), then because of the bloody great food they served us, at suprisingly average prices! And not to forget 'Sto Lat' for the birthday boy (who happened to be me...) sung by all the staff. Well, i had Rosol (Chicken soup) and grilled oscypek (Highland cheese) for starters - lovely... followed by the coup-de-grac: 500 grams of pork ribs, meat so tender it was falling off the bone... served with potatoes, rice, white cabbage and red cabbage - absolutely amazing! on the side i had a 1 liter stein of Zywiec...

Apart from the meals, we got fresh bread, pickled cucumbers and pickled cabbage to start, and a shot each of their home-made cherry vodka to finish us off...
