Paintings & Day Trip

by Zvrlj

We have two questions, and your answers will help us organize our stay in Krakow in the second half of August:

1. Are the Polyptych of St John the Almsgiver, Michal Lencz altarpiece the Debno Holy Trinity… exhibited in the building of Sukiennice?

2. Is the day-trip Krakow-Wieliczka-Bochnia-Lipnica Dolna-Krakow good idea?

Thank you,
I&V

Some weeks ago when I visited Krakow, the picture collection in the Sukiennice was closed for restoration.

Do you think about Czartoryski Museum (with Leonardo's "Lady with an Ermine")? It is closed for restaurations, I have checked (and it was confirmed to me by museum authorities by e-mail). Is it possible that the other museum is closed too???

Re: Paintings & Day Trip

I mean the museum with paintings inside the Sukiennice.

It is possible the musem is open now. You should ask in the forum.

Good news (after an hour of googling):

The Gallery of 19th Century Polish Art in Sukiennice (The Cloth Hall) – Branch of the National Museum in Krakow
1 Main Market Square
Exibition is temporarily presented in the Royal Castle at Niepołomice
Niepołomice, 2 Zamkowa Street

Museum web page is not working properly (or at least it does not correspond with our computer/internet connection properly, and all other web-pages do), but with a lot of patience I've managed to seize the info :-)

Niepołomice is 26 km away from Krakow, so we'll see the collection on the day we'll see Wieliczka salt mine. Bochnia-Nowy Wisnicz-Lipnica Dolna will be our route on the way back home.

Thank you Maurizio! :-)

The salt mine are extremely good idea too.
BTW where are you staying??
I can recommend Wislina rooms for rent , just 20 m from the square on Wislina st. Right in the hart od Staro Miesto (old city) check EuroMeet Krakow pages and they are listed there. We had great room (3 beds) with kitchen & bathroom , internet & cable TV for 40 Euros a day. The meet was 4 days we stayed 7. great place, will go back again.
To my shame my Krakow pages are not up and running...

Hvala Valentina. Friend of our friend has apartments, and he is not charging anything for us, for 5 nights. We have seen some photos and all of his apartments (3 of them) look beautifully. As far as I know the price is in the range of 40-50 E. Actually, it is the great saving for us. We plan to spend one night in Banska Bystrica (on our way to Krakow), and we have several options for the return, so we'll see.

Travel Tips for Krakow

Weddings

by jo104

During the time when Poland was under communist rule a coupld would undertake 2 weddings one being a civil partnership at a magistrates & the other being a religious ceremony in a Catholic church. Communism did not recognise Catholism although 90% of Poles were catholic. We spotted this car adorned with beautiful flowers during the day & then later at nght the same party were holding their reception at the restaurant we ate at.

Huge and unique basilica

by sihi

The Gothic St Mary's Church, towering over the Main Market Square of Krakow, houses Wit Stwosz masterpiece: Europe's largest Gothic altar.
From the taller tower of basilica, the bugle call is sounded every hour. This bugle call is conected with one old legend and history of the city. EURORE'S LARGEST GOTHIC ALTAR

Bejgle

by sphynxxs

Old Galicia was the birthplace of the bagel long before it bacame a new world deli, and so it is no wonder that you will find the rustic old shape of it in the form of bejgle, sold at any street corner in Krakow (as well as in other Polish cities, but they seem to be far more frequent here). No lox, no cream cheese and if you want a posher, more contemporary option you´ll have to go to Nava´s bagelmama, but it certainly has stuffing quality for a quick hunger rush

Dragons' Parade

by Skeptic-jr

Till 2000 every year, usually in the beginning of June, there is organized a great Dragons' Parade in the city of Krakow. It is a procession of reptiles and knights from the Main Market Square to the Wawel Hill, family picnic near the castle with many activities for kids and adults, concerts and contests, the huge "lights and sounds" show and fireworks in the evening on the shore of Vistula River.

In 2005 almost 50 dragons and thousands people took place in parade.

The main organizer is Groteska Theater. For the reports about the previous editions of the event and the current development of the plans for next parades you can see at their webpage.

Go to a derby

by kolabor

Personally I haven't been to a derby game here, but no matter in which part of the city you are- you can always feel it. On that day the air is heavy, police is out in numbers and the thought among the people is "Who will it be?". Last time it was 0:0 :)- but still the game was very exciting...
For tickets on that particular game you would have to stand in long lines, but if you got it- you can really feel satisfied :). Of course "club colours" would be recommended... and the TICKET :)
