Zakopane is placed in Tatra Mountains but If you don't like to hike and you want to feel the atmosphere of Podhale you can walk through the centre of Zakopane (Krupowki Street), visit market at the foot of Gubalowka, go up by cable railway to the Gubalowka and see great panorama of Zakopane and Tatra mountains.Go to Koscieliska street with old church and cementery, also with many old houses.
There are several museums like Tytus Chalubinski Tatra Museum, The Natural Museum of the Tatra National Park, Stanislaw Witkiewicz Zakopane Style Museum, Karol Szymanowski Museum.

Ski jumping
by Maggies
The best Polish ski jumper Adam Malysz won World Cup in 2001 and really he was flying then, not jumping. Then he won it in 2002 again and got 2 medals in the Olympic games in Salt Lake City. 5 years later Adam still rules, he's got GOLD in the World Championship in Sapporo today (03.03.2007).
All polish people are great fans of Adam and are so proud of him. He's not only the best Polish sportsman in years but also an extremly modest and down to earth person.
Go Adam!!! The World Cup in Zakopane is organized on 18th of January!!!

Gubalowka
by PaulKirk
Gubalowka is a ridge overlooking Zakopane with fine views of the Tatra Mountains and the town. The funicular takes about 5 minutes. At the top is a path that follows the ridge in either direction. Surprisingly there are a number of stalls, bars and grills at the top so eating and drinking are not a problem if you accept basic facilities. There is also an all year round metal bobsleigh run. It's cheap and fun and runs for about 1000 metres. Be warned some people go very slowly so time your start to get an uninterrupted run. You can walk off the ridge in a number of ways or you can find the chairlft and ride down in a 5-seater chair. Neither the funicular or the chairlift were busy when we used them although there were plenty of people at the top.
We walked along the ridge from Harenda. There were no bars on the way and it was longer than it appeared to be from the map. A circular tour around Zakopane to the north taking in Huty, Stary Mlyn and Harenda suggested the map wasn't perfectly to scale.
Old quarter of the town & Zakopane style
by vesna04
Stanislaw Wilkiewicz developed very recognizable architectual style named Zakopane style. The word is about wooden houses. Those old houses can be seen in the old part of town. His influence can be noticed on new buildings too.
Stanislaw Wilkiewicz died in 1915 and has been buried in Zakopane.
