Forests
The various composition of the mountains and their high altitude result in the layer vegetation: starting with thick sub-alpine forests, through the layer of mountain meadows (called in Polish - hale) up to the level of rocks.

THE CAR
See that patch of snow?
we are getting higher...
We will arrive at Krakow midday and would like to know the best way to get to Zakopane for Christmas. I have read that the train is very slow, the roads are crowded in season and Poland has a very high accident rate. Is there a bus direct from the airport to Zakopane? Hiring a taxi seems very expensive (300zl) but I don't know far it is.
train is slow if there is lots of snow. i have no idea, where and why (!) you heard about high accident ration in Poland, but imho it is a lot of &^% ;)
If you do not have an experience in driving in truly snowy conditions, i would not recommend hiring a car - Zakopianka (the name of the road from Krakow to Zakopane) can be treacherous. The drive would take an experience driver around an hour - but it all depends on conditions.
300zl is around £50 so i would go for it, especially that you will most likely need some kind of transport from station to wherever you are going to stay.
my next choice would be train. maybe slower then car, but cheaper and comfy. i would keep off the buses - they are slower then train and rather crowded.
have a brill stay!
My advice is to go by bus/coach - much much cheaper than a taxi, and quicker than a train (2h vs 3h30m). The bus station is next door to the train station so if you get the shuttle from the airport you could be on the Zakopane bus within 30 minutes.
it takes 2 hr and 10 min from the train/bus station to get to zakopane....a whole lot faster than the train....and they leave every half hour....but how many people are you?....if you are enough it might just be worth while to take a cab....100 zl in pounds is not alot

There is plenty of hiking paths around Zakopane. The Tatra trails are all marked with plates or boards with name of places and colour bars indicating particular trails. In the difficult parts there are staples, chains and sometimes ladders to help you climb or simply move forward.
I can't remember the exact name of this restaurant but it is located next to the ski school and at the bottom of the main slope.
A very cost atmosphere with a big wood-burning fire. Lots of traditional poilsh fare. Mushroom soup IN bread. Or the kielbasa with sauerkraut also served IN Bread.
You can try the mulled wine or the women's tea with black cherry vodka if you want a warming beverage.
Nosal is one of many tiny ski resorts in Zakopane. Facilities are very old compared to western europe. Still, one slope is challenging, steep and in a good shape. it's a northface hill which means that it doesn't catch much sun and the snow stays smooth until spring. Prices are moderate. In winter there might be long queues, but in march it was no problem.
After a half-hour walk along the ridge of Gubalowka we reach Butorowy Wierch from which we can take a ride down on a double chair-lift back to Zakopane.
The ride on the chair-lift gives an unforgettable feeling, not only because of the beautifully visible panorama of the Tatra Mountains but also for the sake of peace and quiet.
You may buy return ticket going up to Gubalowka and down from Butorowy Wierch to Zakopane.
