One day in Zakopane.

by gleneden

Hi, two of us will be spending just one day in Zakopane at the beginning of May and as we will be travelling from Krakow in the morning and back there in the evening I was wondering if it would be possible to fit in both Morski Oko and also Dolina Checkolowska on the same day. We would intend using the horse drawn carriages where possible. Any information at all will be really appreciated.

Unfortunately i do not know what kind of the connection actually are there now...
However i think it will be hard but maybe not possible.

If you decide to go just to one place - you can choose MorskieOko, take horse drawn carriages with highlander ;) and then take a 3 hours walk to Czarne lake (black lake) is on the left side from Morskie Oko, where you will have gorgeous view on the highest peak of POland - Rysy ! ( 2499 m above level sea). It will take you one hour to hike/ trekk up( ?) to the Czarne lake - but will be worth.

I don't think these two trips would be possible on one day and if I were you I would choose Lake Morskie Oko. You must first take a bus or a private mini-bus to Palenica Glade and then a horse-drawn cart to Wlosienica mountain glade. To reach Lake Morskie Oko you then have to walk the 1.5 km each way - no transport possible from there. The walk to Czarny Staw (Black Pond) may or may not be possible though. In early May there may still be snow lying there. But the view from the place is stunning and you can have a meal in the hut by the lake.
It's a trip not to be missed. Enjoy it!

It's possible but not so good idea as it's on oposite sides of Tatry.
Also no pleasure of crowd in first weekend of May (Bank Holidays here).

Travel Tips for Zakopane

Zakopane and South-Polish style

by sihi

Zakopane is well known of own style of architecture, what is very interesting.
On this picture you can see a house on territorium of St. Fatimska Church. It is a typical stile of modern house architecture in south-Poland. Houses of this style have usualy 3-5 floors and owners are simple families who usualy offer accomodation for tourists. Nice...

Skiing

by Maggies

Zakopane is the best place for skiing in Poland. As a result the queues on the slopes can be ridiculous here, sometimes it takes even 2 hours to wait for the skilift. Sounds crazy? I guess... But you must know that the second activity here, except for skiing is meeting people. And standing 2 hours in the line you sure have time to talk to people around you.

Cable car from Kuznize to Kasprowy Wierch

by barryg23

For quick access to the Tatras, taking the cable car at Kuznice, 3km south of Zakopane, is a good option. It might be worth reserving tickets the day before if possible, otherwise you'll probably have to queue. As soon as we arrived in Zakopane, we tried reserving tickets at the tourist office for the following day but they were all sold out.

We arrived at Kuznice the next morning at about 9a, and had to queue for 30 minutes for the cable car. It cost us 20 Zl (about 7.50 Euro) each for a single trip. The scenery was stunning on the first half of the journey. We could see Zakopane behind us, beautiful fir trees below us and the peaks of the Tatras in the distance.

Halfway up we left our car and joined another for the ascent to the summit. Most of this journey was through the clouds unfortunately. While we could no longer appreciate the view it was still quite fun to be travelling through the clouds - though rather worrying for our planned hiking. We could only see the about 5 metres of cable car lines behind us and nothing in front of us. Everything else was white. Even the ground below us was hidden. So much for fantastic views from the top.

There's a restaurant, shop and other facilities in the cable car station at the top of Kasprowy Wierch.

Gubalowka

by travelfrosch

If you walk north on Kurpowki Street, you'll pass through a busy open-air market and on to the base station for a funicular to climb Gubalowka Hill. To get to the top, you can either take the funicular or hike. The former costs Zl 8-10 one way, Zl 14-16 round trip (prices vary depending on season). The hike takes about an hour and is not terribly strenuous.

At the top, you almost feel as though you're in a theme park. Stalls abound all along the road, containing restaurants and shops of every conceivable shape and size. Whatever a tourist might desire -- anything from beer to coffee cups to a pony ride -- is available for a price. Still, the atmosphere was more of fun and relaxation than of pushy commercialism. And the views of the Tatras are very impressive -- and free.

Morski Oko - 2

by Ben-UK

Having walked to Morski Oko and enjoyed the views and a coffee in the cafe there, we decided to take the horse-drawn transport back. They wait until there are enough people to fill the carriage so we went to the other nearby cafe and had a hot beer (can't get that in England ...) -- the driver kindly came for us when his carriage was ready to depart -- great ride back to the entrance area.
