I've seen an "expert" interviewed on television who said that it's almost im-
possible to tell real amber from faux. Why not buy some thst you like? Why spend a fortune on something that may or may not be real? If experts can't tell the difference, your friends won't be able to, either.

There's a nice shop at the airport.

seems the only fail safe trick is to heat a needle and try to bore a hole through the amber. It is supposed to be easy to burn and the smoke should smell nice not plastic like... of course that is hardly something the seller would allow you to do ;)
so I was expecting something like a "Denominazione di origine controllata" or something to certify that it is baltic amber from Poland, from Estonia or Lituania... but seems there is no control :( so buyer beware I guess is the key word...
of course if you like the jewellery... and it is amber or not matters little... yet it is somehow encouraging fraud... but I might be living in a dream world!
cheers

There is a lot of real amber sold in Poland. You will find a few shops selling amber in the Old Town. And I'd recommend Cepelia shops, where you can also get some beautiful folk art. One such shop is in the centre - at the corner of Marszalkowska and Aleje Jerozolimskie streets, just outside the Metropol Hotel, two more in Plac Konstytucji. The shops at the airport have the highest prices.
Travel Tips for Warsaw
They are still re building Warsaw
by scottishvisitor
The reconstruction of Warsaw is still on going. There are so many truely beautiful buildings and it is difficult for a visitor to see them as "new". This particular fine example was once the Jablonowski Palace designed by J Fontana and D. Merlino. Work is still evidently in progress here as they finish the great tower. Restoration work began here as recently as the 1990's! Can you believe that? Such dedication to detail should not be ignored. It was once the Town Hall between 1773 - 85 known locally as "The Rat House". Progress continues and Poland is growing economically and this magnificent building is now home to The City Bank.
Walk down the main drag that...
by travelmad478
Walk down the main drag that runs from the Royal Castle all the way down to Lazienki Park and beyond. This street is called different names at different points, but the section that's pictured in my photo above is called Nowy Swiat. Here, it's all fancy shops and cafes. A little farther north, it's lined with bookshops and student hangouts as it runs past the university. And a little farther south, it's Embassy Row. All in all, a great place to get a feeling for 19th-century Central European style and society.
Warsaw by night
by HORSCHECK
Most sights and monuments are beautifully illuminated at night. Especially the Palace of Culture and Science offers a special atmosphere at night.
Another must-visit place at night is the viewpoint Gnojna Gora in the Old Town. It offers panoramic views of the Praga district, the Vistula River and its bridges.
My best memory!
by matcrazy1
What is my best memory of Warsaw and what I miss the most when I am away from Warsaw? Well, the reply is obvious: great company of over 20 VT-ers I was lucky to meet during the VT-meeting which took place on 20 - 22 January, 2006. So, let me share pictures and some, excuse, long comments on them... Do NOT rate this and the next tips, please!
Picture policy: just in case you want me to delete any of your pictures (no matter why), e-mail me as soon as possible, please!

Poles applaud when the plane lands
by marielexoteria
I don't know if this is true for everyone else in Poland but all the Poles in our flight (and they were about 75% of the passengers) applauded when the plane landed in Warsaw. And here I thought Dominicans were the only ones who did it hehe.
