I booked two nights in Metropol Downtown Hotel via Expedia.com. It is next to Centrum Metro Station (which is not so close to the Old Centre), opposite the big Novotel hotel. The Hotel is a bit Warschaupact style; the room was simple and small, a bit hot, and outside it is very noisy. The television shows only Polish channels and German commercial junk channels. I missed CNN, BBC and everything that was going on in the Middle East. Best of all was the breakfast buffet, which was superb. All in all, it was ok for the price.

The Metropol is as central as you can get, right next to the main junction in Warsaw, on top of the walkway to the metro, a few hundred yards from the main train station.
The hotel itself is old - a relic of the communist era I suppose. Rooms are dark and small (but clean). No air-con, no fridge. Breakfast was surprisingly good.
Overall a moderately priced hotel in a good location - expect nothing more.
I have stayed in this hotel several times over the last few years. I am a 39 year old male tourist from the north of england.
The most overiding positive about this hotel is its central location and very reasonable rates! However you get what you pay for!!! the rooms are very small and dark brown coloured, the bathrooms are very smalll too. the rooms are clean and the staff are ok.
Directions: across the street from the palace of culture, immediatly on a subway, a bus and tram stop with a few yard, about 300 metres to central train station.
