Spirit of Gdansk
by Rawicz
Everyone walking for the first time on the streets of Gdañsk is surprised by the high picturesque beauty of the city's layout, rare splendour and luxurious sumptuousness, that manifest themselves everywhere.
Always alive remains the traditional love of freedom, revealed equally strong in the 15 century, when burghers of Gdañsk shaked off the yoke of the Teutonic Knights as well as in the times of "Solidarnoœæ", when they successfully revolted against the communist system.
You can meet here old Ukrainian singing about freedom and this is not by any chance.
Long Waterfront (Dlugie Pobrzeze)

A walk along this pedestrian street along the western bank of the Old Motlawa and the Motlawa river is definetely the site I would take someone who had never been to Gdansk before. There are many reasons. Let me list a few:
- amazing views at the river and the granaries on the opposite side,
- charming restaurants and pubs along,
- crowds of people passing by,
- the Crane - the world's largest piece of port handling equipment in 15th century,
- the departure point of a ferry to Westerplatte and to the Central Maritime Museum on the opposite side of the river. Sunset over the Motlawa river.
Gdansk coat of arms
by matcrazy1
I saw this coat of arms on many old houses and edificies all over the Old Town. Two white crosses topped by yellow crown on red background derives from gonfanons, originally red in color. The flags (banner form) were flown from the stern of the vessels, the mast carrying the gonfanon of the colors.
In Prussian/German Danzig before WWII very similar flag but with simpler crosses was in use, look here.

And there's not only sand and beaches...

Along Monte Cassino street (again an Italian name!) you will find most of Sopot's bars, restaurants, clubs, museums and so on! Most of the town itself is along this long pedestrian street which goes from the train station to the Molo.
It's very nice just to walk along this street, there's a lot of life in summer, and also at night I think it's the main place in the Gdansk area for entertainment!
