2 days in Gdansk

by Jude2u

Hi,

I'm visiting Gdansk next week for a very quick trip, arrrive Tuesday morning go home on Thursday morning.
We intend to get the bus from the airport, we are staying on Jana z Kolna, are we best to walk from the station?

Please give any advice for making the most of our trip.
Any tips on good Polish places to eat and drink, night life, things not to miss.
Is Sopot worth a visit now that it is winter

Thanks

Jude x.

Sopot is always worth a visit.
You should devote first day to Gdansk (old town, as DLugi Targ str. Szeroka, Mariacka, Chlebnicka) and the second day you should spend in Sopot. Take local train to Sopot. The main street (Bohaterow Monte Cassino)runs from the train station down to the Sopot's pier. Sopot is nice during the day with all its galleries, and the cafes, but it is the best at night where the whole street changes into one big party.
Restaurants in Gdansk and Sopot are all "tourists friendly". That means, it is OK to stick your nose, or to stroll through the entire restaurant and read the menu, even if you don't order anything. Don't be afraid to find your own favorite place. Restaurants are also allowing their patrons to stay as long as they wish, you don't have to eat and leave (like in US ;-)

Hi!

Visit Old and Main town; St. Mary basilica.
Sopot is worth a visit - you can visit some restaurant or club there.
:)

Travel Tips for Gdansk

Spirit of Gdansk

by Rawicz

Everyone walking for the first time on the streets of Gdañsk is surprised by the high picturesque beauty of the city's layout, rare splendour and luxurious sumptuousness, that manifest themselves everywhere.
Always alive remains the traditional love of freedom, revealed equally strong in the 15 century, when burghers of Gdañsk shaked off the yoke of the Teutonic Knights as well as in the times of "Solidarnoœæ", when they successfully revolted against the communist system.
You can meet here old Ukrainian singing about freedom and this is not by any chance.

Long Waterfront (Dlugie Pobrzeze)

by matcrazy1

A walk along this pedestrian street along the western bank of the Old Motlawa and the Motlawa river is definetely the site I would take someone who had never been to Gdansk before. There are many reasons. Let me list a few:
- amazing views at the river and the granaries on the opposite side,
- charming restaurants and pubs along,
- crowds of people passing by,
- the Crane - the world's largest piece of port handling equipment in 15th century,
- the departure point of a ferry to Westerplatte and to the Central Maritime Museum on the opposite side of the river. Sunset over the Motlawa river.

Gdansk coat of arms

by matcrazy1

I saw this coat of arms on many old houses and edificies all over the Old Town. Two white crosses topped by yellow crown on red background derives from gonfanons, originally red in color. The flags (banner form) were flown from the stern of the vessels, the mast carrying the gonfanon of the colors.
In Prussian/German Danzig before WWII very similar flag but with simpler crosses was in use, look here.

horseriding in Sopot...

Sometimes it is nice to rest for few hours away from the noisy city. You can do it in many ways in Gdansk, one of them is horseriding. We have several schools for this sport. Below you will find the addresses:

And there's not only sand and beaches...

by Carletto76

Along Monte Cassino street (again an Italian name!) you will find most of Sopot's bars, restaurants, clubs, museums and so on! Most of the town itself is along this long pedestrian street which goes from the train station to the Molo.
It's very nice just to walk along this street, there's a lot of life in summer, and also at night I think it's the main place in the Gdansk area for entertainment!
