Advice wanted.

by jules64

My partner and I are going to Gdansk for a weekend in November. We have been to Poland before. I was just wondering. Is it cheaper or more expensive than Crackow. What are the main things to see and do in the City, is the coast near enough to go for an afternoon. If yes, how is the best way to get there.

Thank you.

I found Krakow and Gdansk to cost about the same. Take the suburban train to Sopot; the beach is a short walk away. Tourist guide: http://www.inyourpocket.com/data/download/Gdansk_IYP_23.pdf

I will suggest the old city of Gdansk between Gdansk Glowny (the main station) and the canal; the monument of Solidarity opposite the former Lenin shipyard.

The sea is far from the city centre of Gdansk (not a walking distance). If you insist, you may take the bus (No 106 or 158) to Westerplatte (the place where WW 2 started) and it's by the sea.It's quite a remote area.If I were you, I'd visit Sopot and go for a walk to the pier and the beach.

HI

I go to Gdansk about 6 or 7 times ayear and love it. AM bored of Krakow now.

Lots to do, make sure you go to see the crane, the long market etc.

Food is excellent. Beer is cheap. And worthwhile visiting the carrefour supermarket ( taxi) and the madison park shopping centre.

Eat at the stalls in the market,best sausage ever.

Enjoy and maybe see you there as off ourselves in Nov

Travel Tips for Gdansk

Just wander around the city...

by seraphim

Just wander around the city centre, breathing in the atmosphere and seeing the sights. There's just to much of them to describe them all here. Dlugi Targ, the main town hall, St. Mary's Church and ul. Mariacka are certainly highlights.

Baltic Sail - Sail Gdansk !!!

by Dagon

Every year, on the end of July sailingboats are comming to Gdansk becouse of Baltic Sail :)

It's very big maritime event on baltic see. Boats are racing between some of the Baltic ports :) After every part, there is some time to spend in those cities :)

In Baltic Sail everyone can take part (of course, if he has a sailing boat :) ) There are diffrent classes for diffrent yachts :)

If you can't sail to Gdansk, you can just come to see those boats :) View is nice, becouse you can see them in historical habrour of Gdansk - in front of the Crane and along Long Wharf (Dlugie Pobrzeze).

Stone architectural designs

by matcrazy1

There are stone architectural designs not so easy to find outside Gdansk. First of all, long, horizontal, stone sticks topped with a head of a dog or a wolf. It's rather the dog's head, I guess, as a dog symbolizes friendliness and hospitality. Did anyone welcome you coming back home as friendly as your own dog? These unusual creations seperate terraces which belong to neighbouring houses. Sometimes there are hidden behind flowers in bloom.

Futhermore, there are various stone figurues, always placed symetrically on both sides of stone steps leading to terraces put in front of houses. Typically there is a post with a large stone ball put on. At the base of a post there is a small stone put. Its function was to alert a coachmen to a narrowing of a street and thus to protect a carriage against a crash into a post. There are less common stone structures put in front of Gdansk houses as well. Open my pictures, please.

Church of St. James (1432 - 1437)

by matcrazy1

The Roman catholic church which belongs to the Capuchin order since 1946 didn't look very interesting at first sight - just typical, rather small, brick, one-nave gothic structure with square tower in front part. The edifice is hidden behind trees and two small, old, brick country-style houses which surprisingly still stand and look strange but nice at this place. When I entered the church I found information on its very interesting history: the church was twice destroyed and rebuilt (in 1636 by fire and in 1945 by war), it belonged to Roman catholic and prostant community, to Polish and German community, there was a prison, public library, Chamber of Commerce in the edifice.

I paid attention to frescoes by Polish artist Zofia Baudouin de Courtenay put on side walls between impressive stained glasses. They depict scenes from the holy bible and daily Capuchin life. There is impressive and original renaissance ceiling.

I visited this church at Lagiewniki Street walking the shortest way from the old town towards Gdansk shipyard and Solidarity Square. Do not skip it.

HISTORY
1432 - 1437: the church was built by sailors at the place of a chapel built in 1415 in honour of Saint James, the patron saint of sailors. The earth from Jerusalem (Israel now) was laid in the foundations. Polish graves were put in the church walls;
1551: the Gdansk City Council intends the church for Poles;
1556: the church is intended for protestants, sermons are spoken in Polish;
1636: a fire destroys the church, restoration takes 3 years, the tower originates from this time;
1807: Napoleon's troops change the church into a prison for Russian and Prussian prisoners of war;
1819: the church is rebuilt to host a public library and maritime school of navigation;
1904: the Gdansk Chamber of Commerce is located in the church till 1945;
1945: the church is destroyed during fights;
1946 - 1948: the Capuchin order rebuilts the church.

Sopot is a beautiful beach...

by Tolik

Sopot is a beautiful beach resort near Gdansk, popular with Poles, and increasingy attractive to Westerners - Swedes and Germans in particular. It has different spirit from Gdansk: the fashionable clothes shops, bars, casinos - seem light years away from both historic central Gdansk and industrial shipyards area.
