Bring warm clothes, the weather is about same as in Ireland. Today is cold -9 C. For sure you can buy good clothes for not expensive prices in Gdansk.

I used to live not far from Gdansk in Suchacz, and have house there - see my Suchacz web pages!

This particular winter looks like being cold. In 2003 we had minus 20 daytime, minus 29 nights in January for a few days, fortunately with sun. In general though, daytime January temps hover around freezing. Variable, though. Stout footwear (snow, slushy snow, at times) recommended. Damp sea air makes it feel chillier than it really is - but on a fine, clear day, absolutely super!

Have a good trip. Visit Elblag, Malbork, Kadyny, Suchacz, and Hel!

Travel Tips for Gdansk

Famous Gdansk citizents...

by Dagon

I didn't know, where to write about that, so I decided to write here. :)
I'm sure, that most of you heard about people, I'm going to write about, but maybe you didn't know - they were somehow connected with this city.
- Guenther Grass - he was born here (in Wrzeszcz on 13 Lelewela street). In Gdansk are set many of his books.
- Jan Heweliusz - he lived in Gdansk in XVII century; he had many jobs, but most important was astronomer. He widened people knowledge about astronomy. He discovered many things, and that made him well known in Europe.
- Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit - well known physicist. He made many inventions, for example - his own scale of temperatures ("0" in this scale is equal to the coldest Gdansk winter - in 1709), which is today used for example in US.
- Artur Schopenhauer - he was born in Gdansk, but travelled west when he was 5.
- Lech Walesa - I think, I don't have to write about him - everybody knows something about him (lets say only Solidarity).

Events in Dlugi Targ

by gosiaPL

I was surprised to see this right in the middle of the Dlugi Targ (Long Market). There was this huge structure, a climbing wall for the 2nd European Youth Cup 2006. If it's a second cup, then I guess it's going to be a regular thing perhaps? Kids from many European countries competed, cheered by the huge audience and tourists who stopped for a moment. It was awesome to see the kids bounce in the air after they finished before they were pulled back to the ground.

Snobism, new fashion or advertisement?

by matcrazy1

I've seen very old automobiles put by local restaurants/stores in Gdansk. This light blue, old, American car is put by the Millers' Guidhouse (restaurant now). Is it Cadillac used as a kind of advertisement or the car of the snobby owner of the restaurant? Excuse, Germans, old American cars are larger attraction for Poles than German ones.

But it's much easier to find old cars typical to the Soviet bloc which are still in use in Gdansk and Poland, like Polish Fiat 126p (the smallest car ever) or less common East German trabant (trabi) and Soviet Volga.

windsurfing on Baltic sea

by Landad

If you have some extra time in 3-cities, you can learn how to windsurf or if you already know how to do it, you can enjoy surfing on Gdansk Bay. For 55PLN you will get 60min lesson with your own trainer and full equipment.
If there are 2 of you, for 400PLN you will have 5 lessons (40PLN from 1 person) with the trainer. Try it! It is a great fun! :)

Sea resort Sopot

by Raimix

Sopot, as Polish call it, is the most popular sea resort in their land. It reaches population of about 40 000, it is a part of Tricity (in Polish Trojmiasto).

Sopot is well know in Europe because it is large health–spa, has longest wooden pier in Europe (about 516 meters) and is a city of Sopot International Song Festival, the second largest after Eurovision Song Contest.

The resort has nice mixture of blockhouses, wooden houses, nicely prepared hotels, and casinos, some churches. It was nice to visit Sopot’s lighthouse to see panorama of seaside, some architectural objects.

Sopot is about 12 kilometres from Gdansk. These cities have easy connection between each other – mainly trams, trains.
