Getting help to change trains in Katowice

by passel

I will be travelling from Krakow to Vienna and need to change trains in Katowice. I have only 9 minutes between trains. Can I make it? How can I get help? Are there station employees to assist? Porters? How do I get their attention? Wave a fistful of zlotys? I'm a 60 year old woman, so won't be able to run from one track to another.
Thanks for all advice. Passel

Waving a fistful of zloty is seriously *not* a good idea.

I have not been to Katowice station but I doubt here are porters; it is always best to travel by train with luggage you can handle by yourself.

European train change times are usually ample for what is required (and that does not mean running). It may even be that you will not even have to change platforms.

The reliable

tells me that your Katowice train leaves from platform 3, but unfortunately does not give the arrival platform for the Krakow train.

Really, I don't think you need to worry. If the worst comes to the worst, there are several other connections you can catch (albeit with a longer onward journey). Explore the site above to reassure yourself.

Thanks, Lec. Especially for the website. I can use it for other portions of my trip as well. Passel

Re: Getting help to change trains in Katowice

by leics is an excellent and very reliable website. It only gives fares for/from Germany, but carries times and details for almost all European trains.

Hopefully another Vt-er with personal experience of Katowice station will come along soon..but, if not, just make sure you can handle your own luggage, and don' worry! :-)

Travel Tips for Katowice

Curreny exchange

by ZiOOlek

I always change currencies at Kantor Wymiany Walut of Andrzej Tomczyk in 12 Mickiewicza street in Katowice. The exchange office is located in the city center. It has good exchage rates. Moreover, it is possible to chage here (buy or sell) not only popular currencies but also currencies from such cuntries like: Bulgaria, Denemark Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and much more. Currencies from mentioned cuntries are not changed in all offices.

Katowice has few skyscrapers. They are not so big like in Warsaw, but... Katowice is more "skyscraper friendly" then any other big city in Poland(after Warsaw).
Katowice is surrounded by big cities like Bytom, Sosnowiec, Tychy,... and is as large industrial center. May-be because of that office-rooms are needed in Katowice.

If you are traveling by motorbike

by arantha

If you are traveling by motorbike, better make sure that you have all spare parts for your motorbike because the motorbike market is very poor in Poland and you could have problems with buying off-hand something you need.

Another park worth visiting is...

by Wiktoria

Another park worth visiting is called park im. Tadeusza Kosciuszki. This one has nice fountains, ponds, historic church from the 16 century and even a tower for parachute jumps. There is an airport close to this park. From time to time they have air shows. This is a real fun place!
