Opera on the Castle - The Great Contest of Tenors
by sprdak11
In the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes there is an opera. Each year during summer ( usually in the end of July) there is organised a great concert and contest of the Tenor vocalists. If the weather allows, it takes place in the courtyard. The audience are given roses and after hearing the aria of each contestant, vote for his/her favourite one by putting the flower to his basket. It's really a nice concert.

Emerald Lake
by J4r0
The Lake Szmaragdowe (Emerald Lake, by 1945 ger. Hertasee) located in Bukowa Woods (Beech Woods, by 1945 ger. Buchheide Forst) is widely considered one of the most beautiful places in Szczecin. Its name comes from the calcium carbonate dissolved in water making it amazingly green. The lake is 16-20-metre-deep.
The lake appeared on the 26th July 1925 after the chalk mine belonging to the factory of Portland cement "Stern" had been flooded with subsoil waters. 39 miners died then. Until today there are remnants of mining machines and facilities at the bottom of the lake (you can see them when the weather is fine). When looking from the Kopalniana Street (by 1945 ger. Katharinenweg) side, you will see a vantage bridge which used to be the part of the route of mining trains.
According to the legend, the one responsible for appearing of the lake was the Treasure Keeper, the lord of underworld. He flooded the mine when workers found the treasure chests he was looking after. Due to this legend, the water gained its green colour when a gigantic emerald had been broken into tiny pieces. According to another story, flooding of the mine was the punishment for miners' immorality.
The Germans named the lake, "Hertasee", after Herta, the Teutonic goddess of earth. Before 1945, another name, "Kreidesee" (Chalk Lake) was also in use.
