Montechoro update

by TripAdvisor Member SunderlandMackem

Having eyed-up the Montechoro we finally decided to give it a go for a week in April/May 2007.
Well, it is fair to say 4* is a bit ambitious, but the hotel bedrooms were a very generous size, and well maintained. Some of the furnishings were a little tired - faded carpet, old bathroom fittings etc., but it was still a very good room.
At this time of year there was plenty of space at the pool, and pool bar prices are reasonable - 3 euros for a large beer. The large dining room saw a lot of people choosing to take dinner there for 12.50 euros, rising to 15 in summer. All buffet style, but of medium quality, which is true also of breakfast.
Isn't it a pity that a hotel of this standard cannot serve fresh orange juice (it was 'orange drink') or proper filter coffee?
Reception staff were helpful, and there is certainly a big selection of eateries nearby. Sadly, though, you run the gauntlet of touts trying to persuade you into their restaurants, sell timeshare, or enter dubious competitions, and this was a pain.
Plenty of bars sell half-litres of beer for 1.50 euros, and if you like Sky Sports you will be in your element!
So, the hotel is good, and we enjoyed it. However, since it was built it has been surrounded by other apartment blocks, precincts etc., and any aspirations to exclusivity have gone

Great food

by clippytam77 about Koala garden restaurant

This restaurant is very good. If you want to try something different like ostereich steak or kangaroo steak then this the place to eat. The also do your traditional steaks and fish dishes and many more. The service is excellent, very pleasant and the food is good quality. You can actually look at the different steaks they have before you order.

If you collect a "Freemaps best of Albufeira & Montechoro" from anywhere in the old town you will find this restaurant on there. It is number 12 on the Montechoro side. It is only a 10 minute bus drive from the old town albufeira. Starter - Homemade Tomato soup (Delicious)
Main - Kangaroo steak with mushroom sauce (Amazing taste)
Pudding - Chocolate mud cake (Pure indulgance)

Things you don't know but might come in handy:

by JulesRules

- there are no mosquitos in Albufeira; no need to bring sprays or lotions or anything

- Albufeira is expensive. That is, compared to let's say, Greece, where I spent more holidays. Doint groceries and going home with a little bag containing almost nothing costed me over 20 euro. Also the prices in the restaurants are too high for their quality.

- It's still very warm in September, although early in the morning, just before sunrise it has suddenly cooled down. I needed a blanket to sleep under during the night. Imagine!

- The fruit is tasteless. If you're not into fruit but you want your vitamines, go with the "vitamine C in a pil". I never understand why our imported fruit from southern European countries taste good here, but not in there home country!

- Didn't do it myself, but I heard that taking a taxi from Faro airport to Montechoro will cost you 50 euro. The taxi drivers try to have more than two couples in their taxis though.
I travelled by transfer buss - my stop was the first stop fortunately and it took about 35 minutes during night time. The beach - the ocean. Loved it.

Great Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Matthew_Williams

The Hotel Montechoro is a great hotel for families with children. The hotel puts on activities throughout the day for the kids, with the afternoon kids club (2-4pm) giving parents a break from their little'ens.
The room was big and cleaned everyday, and the breakfast catered for all (fruit, toast, fried breakfast etc.).
All the staff were friendly and helpfull.
The hotel is situated at the top of the main strip, but your far away from the noise and bustle for it not to be an issue.

Very nice Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member harrisy1

We had a weeks family holiday there from w/e 21 August 2006. For a start I expected the breakfast buffet to be quite bad at the hotel, based on some of the reviews here. But.... I have to say they were way of the mark big time. Breakfast's were fantistic!!! You could not ask for anything more... Well done Hotel Montechoro...
One thing I was not impressed with was that the staff from the hairdresser's shop was next door to the childrens play area, this meant every time, one of the staff had a cig break, the whole of the basement was littered with disgusting cig smoke. ( it seemed liked every ten - fifteen minutes)

But apart from the cig smoke in the childrens play area, it was ok. The rooms were a bit dated to be fair, but they were clean and sheets and towels were changed daily.

I would come again at the Hotel Montechoro. If we decide to do Portugal again!!!!

Beware of Cardio Hill, we had to walk up there a couple of times. For those of you who do not know Cardio Hill, it is where the complementary coach drops residents of at the local beach. i.e at the very end of the strip....

Absolutely loved it!!

by TripAdvisor Member donnabruce83

Stayed in the Hotel Montechoro on a bed and breakfast basis for a week and loved it!! Room was clean and spacious with clean, fresh towels changed everyday. The air con was on continuously in the room which was magic! The breakfast was lovely with a big selection of food each day. Facilities in the hotel were also great. Located at the top of the strip with plenty of bars and restaurants close by. Definitely recommend this hotel to anyone considering going to the Algarve.

Forget the past

by TripAdvisor Member 2518497

My wife and I read all the reviews of the Montechoro Hotel and were a bit worried about the comments .Many people said that this was not a 4star hotel,it was shabby etcetc.Well, when we visited it in April 2007 it was terrific. There were obvious signs that a lot of money had been spent on both the exterior and the interior. The rooms are large, well equipped ,spotlessly clean, and with maid service second to none.[6 towels changed every day].We stayed half board and the service is Buffet style.Large choice of food, which is good but "safe".Nothing to frighten your taste buds. The Staff, from Reception to cleaners were helpful and smiling.Plenty of sunbeds round the Pool and an attendant is on hand to stop the practise of "booking" loungers at dawn. The clientele is a mix of Brits,French,Germans and a few Portuguese.Incidentally.forget the stories of mad drivers. We found all the locals well-mannered in or out of their cars. The hotel is two or three minutes walk from the Strip [1km of bars, restaurants, shops etc] which leads down to a lovely beach.Try Vivaldos for lunch overlooking the beach. There is a lovely walk over the cliffs to Albufeira town whch starts from the western end of this beach. We visited Albufeira Old Town once.Go there but it can be a bit of a disappointment as is the Marina.Best explore the many beaches and coves in the area.So if you are still undecided where to stay, this is one place that will not disappoint

First Class Service

by TripAdvisor Member YorkshirePjc

Stayed in a suite for 3 nights. Accomodation very good. Service by all the staff was above and beyond. Excellent facilities, sizeable hotel bar with first class entertainment every night, cafe bar serving snacks through the day, hotel shop selling english newspapers and 8 tennis courts for those with energy to spare.Buffet breakfast excellent with a vast selection.

Hi Stevie. Haven't stayed at the hotel but friends of our did. It's lovely! We met them in reception on the same night one of the Portugese league football teams were staying there. It's at the very top of the Strip (approx. 20 mins downhill walk to the beach). Good location for accessing the bars and restaurants etc. but not if you're a beach lover. Unless you plan to get taxis up & down!

Hi, I have stayed in this hotel several times and it really is lovely. We have never had any problems, everything is lovely and clean and the staff are very helpful. They have a curtesy bus which runs up and down to the beach free of charge, when you check in you get a Resident Card which you have to show to get on the bus. There is a beautiful restaurant up on the top floor with amazing views over the area. We were even upgraded on one visit from a normal double room to a junior suite which was totally amazing, I didn't want to come home !! You will love it.

Hi, we didn't stay in the hotel much at night as here is so much to do right on your doorstep but we did go into the piano lounge one night and there was a pianist and a lady singing. Depends what age you are or what you are into, it was a bit old fashioned for us but we had a wee romantic dance after a nice dinner and some cocktails so all in a nice evening.

Nightlife, sports, sightseeing.....

RE: RE: Montechoro

its for nightlife mainly. Is it a good spot for good nights out?
Thanks

RE: RE: Montechoro

by bruphil

Yes it can be depending what you're looking for but Montechoro is more quiet than for example Albufeira

But Montechoro is much more stylisher than Albufeira

Or mayby you like football tops and beer bellys so than you can go to Albufeira....

You will find them also in Montechoro but less than in Albufeira

I still can remember a very good Latin bar in Montechoro

Let me find out if it still exist
