More about Janelas do Mar Apartments Albufeira
Nice but too far from everything!
I stayed in these apartments in June this year with four of my friends. It was a very cheap last minute deal, so we were not expecting the Ritz.
We were pleasantly surprised how clean and spacious the apartments were, and despite many reports that the noise from the lift doors drove everyone crazy, we did not find this a problem.
The BIG let down for Janelas do Mar is how very far away it is from everything. It was a solid forty minute walk to the beach, and in the scorching sun this was just a bit too long. The strip was about a half hour walk away.
The apartments are on a private road and away from the main road. For us four girls walking back from the strip at night, it was actually a little bit scary at at one point we did feel quite frightened when we saw a dark male figure walking towards us on a very quiet stretch of road. I wouls advise groups of girls to stay closer to the strip just for safety's sake. It is a shame because otherwise Janelas do Mar was fantastic for the price we payed
Shabby, but the pools were nice!
It was our first holiday experience at peak period as we took our 9yr old neice and 9yr old grand daughter with us this time.
We had to wait three hours for our room to be ready, but enjoyed the time spent by one of the pools. The apartment was very spacious, but the bathroom was in need of attention and the whole apartment appeared shabby. The right hand lift unfortunately broke on our second day (the doors wouldn't open on our floor) but as we were only on the first floor we used the stairs.
The outside pools were lovely, but there was not much else for 2 9yr old girls and the entertainment didn't start until 10.00 which was somewhat late for them. We were in block 3 so not too bothered by the late night noise but I wouldn't advise staying in block 2 unless you are a party animal!
We were able to catch a bus to the strip (or walk) where there are ample restaurants and cafes - all very child friendly, and the 'old town' is really picturesque and interesting. The two theme parks we took the girls to ' Zoomarine' and 'Aquashow' were excellent - and well worth the money.
hot, noisy nights
Overall the apartments were clean and spacious however a little shabby and could do with decoration. The pools were clean, and very necessary as the beach was 40mins walk away!
The apartments were very hot by night, and as there was no air conditioning you had no choice but to leave all windows open. This would mean you could hear every little (or big!) noise from outside. Although drunken people were annoying, the bin-men were at the top of the list, emptying bins at 3am. Whats the need?!
although the apartments were generally in working order, we did endure cold showers thorughout our stay, even after complaining twice.
Would go back to Albuferia again as once we walked into the strip and to the beach we had a very good time. Would rather stay nearer the beach.
The exursions we arranged were all excellent, especially the Jeep Safari which was by far the best day of the hol and even though it was quite pricey it was well worth the money and was enjoyed by all ages.
janelas do mar
Hi, just go back and we had a good time. The apartments were very spaceous and clean. During our stay the staff were very pleasant and helpfull. The two outdoor swimming pools were clean and cooling when the sun was out, but when it wasn't the indoor pool was a great choice. The jacuzzi was warm and soothing and just perfect to relax in.
If you need a few bits of shopping when you arrive the mini-market is next door to the appartments. There is also a bar for refreshments and arcade machines. There s also acess to the internet for a small fee. The local PLUS store was only 5 minutes away and the Strip wasn't far after it. We had "Steak on the Stone" at the Silk Restaurant and the waitress was great and had a joke with us.
Please be extremely carefull of people with fake scratchcards with hidden time shares, never give away any personal details to them. The Oura beach was gorgeous, a little walk but well worth the time due to the scenary being breathtaking. We didn't have the best of weather but we made the most of the good sunny spells.
I would recomend the Janelas Do Mar Appartments to anyone and I will be returning in the near future.
Janelas do Mar...could be better!
We chose this Aparthotel only because we wanted to try something different to the Paraiso de Albufeira for which I have already a review!
The room is airy and spacious but very poorly decorated. The kitchen is fully equiped but we thought it best to give all utensils a good wash:). Our room had a great view to the outside pool and we could see the beach as well. The bathroom was tacky and most of it had minor cracks, ouch on the b.hind lol! The oil heater was not working and was leaking oil, but after we informed reception we got another delivered to our room. Oh and I must say the Hotel being a little high up was very windy at this time of the year.
The best about this place was the heated pool and the excellent jacuzzi!! But I think reception needs to inform it's clients (Spanish) that the jacuzzi is not soley for their use!!! Would I return to this Hotel, not if I could avoid it and especially after having spent the previous long week-end at the Paraiso de Albufeira:)
This was our first trip to the algarve and did not know what to expect. The Janelas do mar appartments were very spacious and clean. The lovely lady who cleaned our appartment always had a smile on her face. Any time we approached any staff they were only too happy to please. We found the appartment very comfortable and everything in it we needed. we went in october so not too crowded our son had the pool to himself most days and loved it! the pool very clean and surrounding areas. We would not hesitate in going back to janelas do mar and felt quite sad to leave.albufeira was beatiful. I prefered the old town to the new one.Getting around could not have been easier. The hotel had a bus you could book return fare for a small price, also bus stopped outside hotel to go anywhere in albufeira for just 1euro also taxis anywhere for 5 euro.Plenty of places to eat. Our son has a nut allergy and we were fortunate enough to find a lovely little restaurant tucked away in the new town recommended by our rep called "mary annes". They made sure he had a chioce of food suitable for his allergy and was very helpful. Fresh home made food and very reasonably priced. The only downside to our holiday was the weather although temp warm it rained.... 3 good days out of 7. It didnt put us of though still had a fantastic time at Janelas do mar..
On arrival, we had to wait 2 hours for our rooms. When getting in them, we see how tacky they were. In our apartment was myself, my partner, and 2 children, boy 9, girl 4. In the other was my sister and brother in law. They had a kettle, but we did not, the kitchen was rather filthy, so cleaned thoroughly before use. This was a first holiday for a long time in school hols, so was pleased when my chidren made friends with others. We stayed up at the top pool the whole holiday as the 2 downstairs were really busy, also a few cockroaches! There seemed to be no one around when someone was sick in the pool, so were quite disgusted by this. Be careful not to sit on the sofas in the reception areas after being cleaned, i did, and it bleached all of my skirt. We all suffered sickness and diarrhoea, especially my youngest who was poorly for several days, but credit to our rep, she was very good. I was particulary concerned when i got something on my foot, it kept blistering and watering, was given antibiotics to take, so could not even enjoy a few drinks! Our holiday came to an end thankfully, on returning i visited hospital and was told that on my foot was the bacteria that you would usually find in the bowels, yuk. We believe this was due to the maid (who was very nice) used the same mop to clean the entire building, even though there was one in both of our apartments. Our partners enjoyed the golf, but not alot else. We would definitely not go back to these again.
Myself and my partner go abroad a couple of times a year and this is the worst place we have ever stayed in.
1 - The pool was filthy with dirty plasters and what looked suspiciously like poo in the water.
2 - Rooms were not cleaned when checking in.
3 - The apartments are just 2 big tower blocks with a tiny balcony.
4 - 30 minute walk to the beach.
5 - On-site supermarket was hugely overpriced
6 - On-site restaurant was crawling with flies (no other restaurant we went into was like this)
ok if you are active
We had a 5 day break here as a last minute break. the apartments are in three blocks, have two pool areas and one bar and one small cafe. Apartment was large and clean, furnishings etc were basic but adequate.
It is situated on a hill above the town, with no other tourist facilities eg bars/restaurants close by. So you do have to go into town to do anything. Its not that much of a walk once you have your bearings, but it is a bit hilly and the shortcuts are across rough ground. The circular bus service stops right outside the apartments. A taxi to the centre cost about £4.
I imagine that if you were there more than a few days the inconvenience of travelling back and forth would become a pain and certainly won't suit anyone not mobile.
We found it fine for a quick break which cost 'peanuts' but wouldn't stay longer.
Better then most S/C Aprtments
Stayed at the JM in June 2007, I have stayed all over europe in similar apartments and have to say I found these apartments better then most.
The biggest downfall is the location, 10min walk to The Strip in Monetchoro via a dirt/gravel path or at least 15 via the road. Walk to beach is at least 30mins id say, doubt you could walk it really.
All this is made up by the fact the complex runs a bus from JM to the strip and then onto Old Town Albufeira every hour, for 3euro per day or 15 per week...Good srevice and alwyas on time.
The complex is 8-9 story 3 building tower blocks with 2 pools, one at block 3 and one bewteen 1 and 2. For familes or thoose wishing to sleep before 1am, reqst Block 3 as the bar in in block 2 and even though my room was on the 6th floor you could hear everything. The rooms were a little out dated but very clean and good views of the resort and sea view in the distance. They also have a TV with BBC 1 and ITV 1 aswell as the usual news cahannels and eurosport, which i thought was good but be warned its 30 euro for the week for the TV.
The Strip in Monetchoro is a typical Holiday resort strip with full of bars and tack restuarants..... Mainly for the lively folk. Make sure you get to the square in Ablufeira Old town, soem super restaurants and some decent bars there too.. look out for ZAZA Asian Kitchen, The Bank and Bravissimo, 3 of the better places to eat altho im sure there more...
These were good apartments with good facilites, like Gym, 2 pools, a kids pool, 5aside footy, tennis courts etc. Not great location but they do have bus service and the rooms themselves were very very spacious.
I would stay again althou as we spent most of our time in the Old Town, thats where i would rather stay, the Strip is too tacky..
One other gripe, they aprts had 3 lots of Stag parties when we there...we didnt mind to be honest but I think some familes may do.
Albufeira - Portugal
albufeira portugal beach
We are going to Albufeira in sep I was wondering if there are many mossies at this time off year.
Also how much does it say cost for a meal or a pint of beer.
Thank you Michael
We went in October, and never saw a mozzie. Meals and drinks are about the same as UK from what I can remember, but do check out some of the great Albufeira pages here on VT.
I was in Albuferia last week and beer is cheap, about £1.75 a pint of Sagres, Portuguese beer which tastes quite good.
Thank you for your replies, cant wait my first visit to Portugal.
You will enjoy it there. If you have the time, hire a car for the day, and drive to Cape St Vincent. Traffic is not so bad as in Spain!
I went last September and i didnt see one! Took all the plug ins, sprays, you name it i took it and i didnt use it. There are many restaurants in Albufeira all taht will suit many budgets. You can get meals bewteen 8 and 14euros but then there are also resturanst were you can pay 20 euros for a main meal. I loved it!! Hope you do.
