A22 Motorway Toll Charges

by enquire

I am getting confused.

I have read various reports about when charging will start on the A22, and I have been unable to establish exactly when this is going to happen. Some say 15th April 2011, and of more concern, January 1st 2011, as we will be in Albufeira over Christmas and New Year, and intend to use the A22 to travel from and to Faro Airport.

Please could somebody fill me in with the latest, and hopefully accurate information, and if applicable, the current Toll Fees, and how these are paid.

We have also e-mailed JK's restaurant regarding Christmas openings, but to date have not received a reply. Are they still open, the website doesn't appear to have been updated for some time.

Many thanks.

The date given in local media is 15th April 2011. The proposal is being fought tooth and nail by local groups.

They will be electronic tolls, so you are supposed to buy the pre-pay tags at post offices and motorway service stations. Given that that there are neither at the airport, that's something they have yet to work out how to deal with.

But avoid the tolls when they come in - just drive along the parallel N125 road like everyone else will if this plan goes ahead.

There is a useful post on another forum concerning the toll system which is already being introduced to motorways in the north of the country. Have a read, especially the last two or three posts.

Sorry I don't know JK's restaurant but if it's anywhere near the old town I can always walk past and have a look.

Thanks Cubsur for your informative and speedy reply. I have read that date on one report, amongst all the vicious opposition, and at least it won't cost us on this trip.

JK's Restaurant is on the right hand side on the road psst the old Alisuper at Castello just past the Ist Roundabout from memory. I am wodering if they on holiday, preparing for the mighty influx at Christmas, having since seen other posts on Trip Advisor as late as October 2010.

Thanks again.

True that many restaurants and bars are currently closed for holidays.

I now know where JK's is located - I take my bike over that way from time to time. Obviously I don't pay any attention!

If I spot anything I will put something here.

Travel Tips for Albufeira

Street signs made from Azuleijos.

by cachaseiro

Many of the street signs in Albufeira are made from the traditional portugese teils called "azuleijos".
I really like them and think that it gives the place a bit of a vibe and show you that this is actually in Portugal, which can sometimes be hard to see in a resort town like Albufeira.
Thank you to the city council for putting them up and let´s have some more of that please.

cork

by MATIM

A large export product from the Algarve’s is cork.
In July the cork peelers start to peel the bark from the cork tree and transport it to the factory.
The tree has to be 25 years before it can be used for cork.
Portugal is the largest cork purveyor of the world.

The Bell Tower

by Carmela71

This tower is part of the parish church and I am not sure if you can go to the top (even if there are lots of stairs that allow you lol), but we did not had much time to go around, so we only walked around.
