Winter in Albuferia

by normanagnew

My wife and I are thinking of a holiday stay in an apartment in Albuferia sometime in Jan/Feb.We know that the weather is generally good at that time of the year but we are concerned as to whether there are enough restuarants open and/also bars with some type of music/entertainment going on? Would appreciate any feedback by anyone knowing what's on in Albufeira Jan/Feb.

First we really do hope that the weather in January and February 2011 is better than it was this year, which was the wettest for 75 years. It certainly cannot be any worse. At least it was warm rain.

Albufeira in January and February is definitely not all that busy, although there are a good number of long stay visitors and others. In the old town centre there are some bars with entertainment that stay open all year but in winter they might open only at weekends. I don't know really what happens a couple of miles across town in the newer end they call 'the strip', but my guess is that not much will be open there, although I am sure others may differ. On top of that there are places I don't know about I am sure, but something could depend on where you are actually staying as to what's close.

Having said that, there are 20,000 or so permanent residents here and we do like to go out from time to time. There is always somewhere to go, even if it's just a few beers, game of darts or pool and a quiz night.

Likewise there are restaurants and cafés open all year to cater for us residents, as there would be in any town of such a size. Just don't expect the kind of choice you would get in the summer. At least they won't be overcrowded.

What I know is that quite some Dutch pensioners spend long weeks or months in Albufeira to escape the winter. I once holidayed there in February for a week. There were always restaurants open (we always had plenty of choice) and I saw entertainment too.
That's about as first-hand information that I can give.

In fact, two friends of mine will be here for 10 weeks starting 28th December and my other two neighbours out the back are already here for the duration. There are enough long-stay visitors to keep things ticking over.

Travel Tips for Albufeira

Postcards and Stamps

by Geoff_Wright

Do shop around for your post cards. The cost varies from 15 Cents to 50 Cents, and they are all of good quality. Some stalls will sell Postage Stamps, but we bought ours from the main post office, in Rua 5 De Outubro, in the main shopping area.

Go into the Post Office, and take a ticket, like at the Delli in the Supermarket, and wait for your number to appear. The staff speak very good English, but they don't hurry themselves. (not a criticizm but a general point of view).

You can purchase nice post cards from the Post Office complete with postage stamps, for 70 Cents (Oct 2004), which is cheaper than buying a separate card and stamp

The Post Office closes for lunch between 1230 and 2 pm..

Silves

by bugalugs

The Cathedral in Silves is apparently very nice, however when we visited it was locked!!
Building started on the cathedral on land that was once a mosque in the 14th century. However over the years and with battles going on the cathedral has had to be restored.
Some crusaders are buried here, there is also a headstone on the floor saying it is the resting place of King Joao II 1455-1495.

S. Sebastiao Church

by call_me_rhia

This is another church whose architecture reflects the popular local style.it was built in the 18th century and it’s in Miguel Bombarda square. It has only one nave.
Interesting things to see are the doorways, for their decorations: they are adorned with stone masonry in Manueline style - whatever this means. I guess your eyes will enjoy their beauty more than empty words can say. Inside there are 6 interesting coloured wooden statues: the artist in unknown
