We are travelling to Albufeira on Christmas Eve and will be self catering. Could you please advise if the supermarkets will be open and until what time Also will we have any problems eating out without haveing pre booked on the 24th and 25th December?
Yes the supermarkets are open on Christmas Eve but only until about 7 or 8 pm at the very latest. It's difficult to be specific as they tend not to put up a notice until about a week before. Shops are closed on Christmas Day of course.
Also, on Christmas Eve, the bars and restaurants tend to close up early. People here have a big family gathering on Christmas Eve and then go to Mass. You don't say what time you might be arriving, but you might have a problem in doing both as shopping will be your priority I think!
On December a few local places will be open but just about everywhere that is going to be doing a 'proper' Christmas lunch or dinner is bookings only. I spoke to a restaurant owner earlier today. He has 65 bookings for Christmas Lunch already at his 76 seat establishment.

That forum is frequented by numerous ex-pats living here (as I do) and also regular visitors and you will find it easier to get a suggestion for both dates easting out wise. Me, I am off to a friend's house on Christmas Day!

You'll find an amazing number of different restaurants all over the town. Obviously in just a few days it's impossible to sample them all, but the ones we did visit, we were more than satisfied with. We had read comments about some restaurants that had tempted us to visit them, but one or two, like, for instance 'The Rover's Return', we decided against, mainly due to the available menu. But in the end I suppose it depends on what you like to eat!
All the esplanades in Albufeira are full, except Fernando's.
Why? Because it's more expensive than its neighbors.
It tries to justify the difference with a better menu and service, and honestly, it is somewhat different. Better? Well... it depends.
I was tired of eating fish, and decided to taste one of my favorite dishes - pork with clams, Alentejo style. I was surprised by an unexpected dish of pickles and chips, with some pieces of pork and clams in it. The result was interesting, but absolutely different of the announced recipe.
The other people enjoyed their meals, and the bill was high as usual in the speculative Algarve. Grilled Fish
Albufeira was my first love in Algarve, before the fool construction has turned it in the concrete forest it is now. I haven't gone there for a couple of years, but each visit became a disappointment, seeing everything sacrificed to the goal of mass tourism. And my God! How Albufeira was nice in those old days...
