General costs in Lagos and surrounding area

by bigdaz84

I was thinking of going to Portugal with a friend but not sure if it's in our budget. Could anyone who's just back advise me on the cost of things like a main course, taxi fares, cost of a beer etc?

Thank you kindly in advance.

I live in the Algarve, so I hope I can help.

Stay away from the obvious tourist traps and you will be fine. Portugal is generally less expensive than many European countries.

You can easily get a lunch or dinner for 8 Euros or less in places where they have the dish of the day type menu. A 6km taxi ride will cost you about 7 Euros, short rides ie around town 3,50 or so. Minimum fare is 3,25 in many towns but there are extras for baggage, additional passengers, rides after 9pm, on Sundays and Holidays ate etc. Lagos has an excellent local bus network which should enable you to get around for a lot less than a taxi ride, with buses running until midnight on some routes in July and August.

Beer - a question close to my heart! A 40cl glass of local beer will cost about 2 Euros in an ordinary bar. This is advertised in English as a 'large beer' or even a pint, but is in fact only 2/3rds of a pint. A small beer (ie 20Cl) will be about 1,20 Euros. Some English run bars sell beer in English pint glasses for anything between 2,50 and 3 Euros. Needless to say if you are sitting in a snazzy seafront bar, you will pay more. Bottled beer is about 1,50 for 33cl so not much different from draught.

In the shops you will find wine, cigarettes (if appropriate)and stuff like fruit and veg cheaper but obviously imported goods are two or three times the price back home.

Talking about beer, just to tell you I bought yesterday 10 bottles of "Super Bock" in LIDL chain for 2.99 euros.

From my experience, Portugal is the cheapest of Western Europe countries. Very cheap drinks, fish, meat, etc.

Go to supermarkets, for example, "Pingo Doce" chain has sandwich for 1 euro, grilled chicken for 4 euros a kg, cold beer for 0.5 euros.

Look for restaurants with "Menu completo" (means that you have soup, main course, drink, dessert and coffee included) that way there's no surprise. In some shoppings you can have that for as little as 8 euros.

Go to campings, www.turiscampo.com has bungalows.

Travel Tips for Albufeira

The strip

by Carmela71

With a name like this one, what can you expect?

A tiny street that ends on the way to the Ouro beach, full of pubs, restaurants, lots of noise I mean music till 4 o’clock ....

there is only one place that puts Portuguese music or I better say Brazilian music, the rest is karaokes and live bands ...

See the Algarve

We hired a car when we were there. We hadnt intended to hire a car, but our holiday was one where we didnt know where we were staying until we arrived. It wasnt very central and quite a lot walk into Albufeira. Also you can get about more easily and find some wonderful virtually deserted beaches.
Unlike Spain where a lot of the holiday areas are built next to the coast, the Algarve is a lot more spread out.

The beach with the town. The beaches are clean, but you could have a problem trying to find a spot especially on Sundays! But I must say that Albufeira is more than beaches and late nights ! The Portuguese food is excellent and accompanied with a good bottle of wine makes an excellent evening. But do steer away from the tourists restaurants have a look around.

The beach by night is iluminated with lights which is not possible to capture the real view on camera.

A street in the Old Town. After spending a day at the beach you can wander through the Old Town.
