Good 4 star hotel in Oporto

by jorgejuansanchez about Vila Gale

This hotel is not too far from historical Oporto and its prices are convenient. Restaurant offers self service system and the breakfast is very rich including codfish, eggs and natural fruit juices. Breakfast are georgeous!

Great pool, quiet hotel

by TripAdvisor Member linasimp

Vila Gale Praia was an AMAZING hotel! It was small, queit, and had a great pool. It was walking distance from a beautiful beach. It was a little bit far from the city (Albufeira) but we had a car with us so it worked out just fine. We liked the fact that the hotel had a DVD library where we can choose movies to watch for free. The rooms were modern and clean. My husband and I got a couples massage at the hotel spa. It was very romantic and relaxing. During the day we went on a boat tour around the caves in the area. The hilight of our trip was the BEST piri piri frango de guia (Spicy baby chicken!) called Rei dos Frangos in the small village of Guia. You must not miss this! I hope to come back to this hotel.

Honeymoon bliss...

by TripAdvisor Member jimbobsarmy

We stayed at the Vila Gale Praia in June 2006 for our honeymoon. We had an absolutely amazing week and wished we could have stayed for longer. The hotel was just want we wanted - quiet, clean, and very friendly staff. The man on reception even surprised us with a free bottle of champagne, fruit basket, and rose petals and candles in our room as we were honeymooners. The location was fantastic with only a 5min walk to the beach which also had 2 nice restaurants that we dined at during the week.

The hotel restaurant was first class too and the food was amazing. The low key entertainment was just right and fitted with the general quiet theme of the hotel (very good guitarest one night and a sax player another night). The staff treated us like royalty and we couldn't have asked for anything more. The hotel seemed to have thought of everything - late breakfasts (ideal for honeymooners :) ) and even a pillow menu to chose your firmness of pillow.

The only downside for our stay was that the spa/jacuzzi area was being refurbished while we were there, but from what we could see of the makeover it looked like it was going to be an excellent facility. We're tempted to go back to try it.

I would say it was the perfect honeymoon hotel

paradise lost

everything good about the vgp by other reviewers we found to be true -- beautiful room (we were upgraded toa sea and pool view).our one gripe is that the hotel has become a focal point for a firm called parador properties to base their clients . this has the following consequences in a small hotel 1) the limited car parking in front of the hotelusually contained 4 or 5 cars belonging to parador properties both morning late afternoon and evening. 2)the public seating areas are quite small and were frequently occupied with the reps from parador and their clients engaging loudly in their discussions which were of no interest to us . 3)on our first night there we entered the dining room and were greeted by the head waiterwith the question--are you bed & breakfast? half board? or with parador properties? the last part of the question was to prove significant! we had come to the gale praia from three days of over -indugence at a well-known hotel in carvoiero and decide to have only a maincourse and sweet from the a la carte menu.we orderd at about 7.55 p.m .and were served our main course at approx. 8.55 during which time we had watched as the clients of parador properties received their 3 courses!!on complaining to the head witer about our treatment he began by saying it was our problem for not ordering a starter he then changed tack and claimed they were very busy (my wife counted 17 people in the restaurant when we first entered!) and finally he made a placatory gesture by way of a generous measure of portuguese almond liqueur (cost in supermarket approx 6 euros a bottle). we have friends going out in May and look forward to comparing experiences.

As good as it gets!

We booked this hotel on the strength of trip advisor and we were certainely not disappointed at all.
The best thing about the hotel is the super super staff , they were all friendly and helpful .
The restaurant staff especially, if you had an attempt at some portugese (all be it from a phrase book ), they were more than happy to lsiten , reply to you in portugese slowly (of course).By the end of the week we were ordering the whole meal , which was great fun !!
A special mention must go to the maitre de , (whose name i have forgot ,sorry). He guided you through the superb choices of food and wines to accompany them .The feng choc is a dessert to die for .A real professional

The rooms were lovely , just right ,we especially liked the fresh fruit and water in your room when you arrived .I recommend the spa treatments ,especilly the romeo and juliet massage , which was truly relaxing .
The hotels position was perfect a minute walk to the unspoilt beach ,and to the other restuarants , overlooking the sea.
It was a wonderful wondeful relaxing holiday

Fabulous Hotel - but Oh no - those Parador reps/visitors!

by TripAdvisor Member bibilayla

A fabulous hotel with wonderfull staff from the reception through to the dining room, who tried to make our stay as comfortable as possible under the circumstances.
Unfortunately we were woken up at night by banging doors as the Parador Property guests arrived in the middle of the night (twice a week), finally dropping off only to be woken up again around 7.30 - 8.00am by banging doors again as guest got themselves down to breakfast intime to meet the many reps that filled with reception for 9.00am.
We then worked out that this was a good time to sleep before having breakfast at 10.00am when all had left for the day!
What a shame that the management has chosen to use this excellent hotel in this way. It could be such a wonderful retreat for couples looking for a quiet time which is the impression they advertise.

Out of this world

We just had a week in the algarve and chose this hotel soley on the reviews that i read here and i am glad to say it is as good as the other people have said. The hotel was amazing the staff were very very friendly ane the food was Extraordinary. We hired a car for the time we were there and used it most day as i am not one to sit around hotels the whole day and we visited some very nice places. We drove to Lagos on the last day and the architecture in the city was very good the streets were all done with small tiles or something that look like tiles we were told to go to a restaurant there called don sebastian which was very good and very popular. If you are the adverturing type then we went on something called quadventura and it is a tour of the algarve but on quad bikes ther're two types of tour a two hour or 4-5 hour one we did the 4-5 hour one which was well worth it's weight in gold we seen some etraordinary places and towns that you would not find by car the tour takes you high in to the hills and shows you lots of things you would not see or exerience any other way.

Fantastic hotel - highly recommended!

Peace and Luxury

by TripAdvisor Member apm1

Booked this hotel after reading excellent reviews. We arrived at 10pm to be welcomed with tea and hot towels to freshen up. Our room was on the 3rd floor and overlooking the pool and the sea. The room was spotless, large and very comfortable with candles and incense. There was complimentary water and fruit and an added bonus of champagne on ice & strawberries as a birthday treat. Breakfasts were fantastic, to suit all tastes and constantly refreshed with newly cooked foods. Ate in the restaurant on one evening which was delicious and good service. Had the hotel poolside to ourselves most days, although the water was very cold! Pool towels and bag supplied. Spa music played throughout the hotel which gave a lovely calm atmosphere. Spa area was lovely especially the jacuzzi. Beautiful beach just outside, very quiet at this time of year. We had a car (although we didnt use it much) but it was good for going out to eat etc in the evenings. The staff at this hotel went out of their way to ensure your stay was comfortable. Rooms cleaned every day and bed linen changed midweek. A fantastic break.

Fastbooking...hotels in Portugal

by diana_renou

Hi, does anyone know if the site www.fastbooking.com is a god site to book hotel by internet? Thank a lot for your advice. Diana

Re: Fastbooking...hotels in Portugal

I prefer to book directly with the hotel - if there are any issues or last minute cancellations dealing directly is best.

There are many chains with hotels available:

http://www.ac-hotels.com/main.asp
http://www.bestwestern.com/

http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=292 ... we stayed here - very nice, great breakfast

http://www.solmelia.com/solNew/home/jsp/C_Home.jsp

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/lispt-lisbon-marriott-hotel/

I'm sure you can probably find more. You can also use the site you mention, but don't book thru the site - try to find the hotel's site. Another site with many hotels is hotels.com - but again, don't book thru them, try to find the hotel's site.

All the best.

Hi,

I never used Fastbooking, so i can't answer your question. But if you want hotels in portugal, i recommend the Vila Gale. It allows online booking with good promotions. I recently went to Madeira, and i made de reservation online. It was very easy and everything work out fine. www.vilagale.pt, it is also in english... :)
