Thank you very much Adam T69. Your info is a great help. I read somewhere that there was an oven in the apts. Wondered if that was a microwave or conventional oven. We have visited Lagos in the past and loved it. Are there any buses or trains that go there? We also like Algarve shopping in Guia. Can we get transport, and do you know where the bus stops are in Alvor? As we are going self catering I wondered if there are any good supermarkets nearby. The Casa de Alvor apts are described as being T1, which is supposed to mean that they're a reasonable size. Would be interested to know if they are. Many thanks
I can help with a couple of your questions:
The main bus stop in Alvor is at the roundabout on the edge of the old village. All buses stop at the same stop going in all directions. There are no timetables or maps on display. Unfortunately that is typical of Portimao council whose bus service would be excellent if anyone knew about it!
There are other stops at various places along the roads leading out of Alvor of course.
There is a direct bus from Alvor to Algarve Shopping, six times a day on weekdays and four times a day at weekends.

The same bus route also goes to Lagos but beware timekeeping at Alvor in that direction, they are often 15-20 minutes late owing to traffic congestion aided and abetted by shoddy timekeeping.
Unfortunately the biggest supermarket in Avor closed down earlier this year when the chain went bust. There are some small shops in the area but for a big supermarket you now have to go to the Portimao Retail Park (bus 8 from Alvor) or into Portimao to the Continente there. There are no supermarkets in the city centre of Portimao, the last one closed last year when the Retail Park opened.
The Continente isn't far out though and there are also ALDI and LIDL stores in the same area.

The beach here is awesome and is always so clean.
You have to take many steep steps to get to the beach or you can use one of the elevators that some of the hotels have provided.
The view of the sea and the beach is what you see on many Portugal postcards so it is nice to be part of a postcard. It was nice to watch the Portuguese families play on the beach.
I do not go out on the beach much but I did get a chance to here.
This is a wee portuguese cafe/snack bar. I think that only really portuguese people go here, cos there were never any tourists in it when I went. Fernando, Seamie and Mickey (another crazy irishman) took me here for lunch. Basically they offer a meat dish and a fish dish and you have one or the other. Both times I went, the food was great and exceptionally cheap!
This Restaurant is recognisable by the large lobster that that sits on the roof, looking down at passers by.
while not that big on the street the restaurant stretches back quite away, most of the tables being set in a covered garden at the back.
the kitchen is viewable (if your sat in the right place) and makes more of the experience seeing the chef's bustling about.
The food is well cooked and beautifully presented and the service was ok.
Not the cheapest restaurant around but then it does mostly serve Fish, Crabs, Lobsters (crabs and lobsters can be seen in a tank as you come in). Lamb, Steaks etc.
none of which are cheap anywhere I think prices for a main course meal start from about Euro 9.
They have a children's menu.
The captains Table is owned by the people who own Paddy's Bar and serves up by all accounts some nice food, My mum and Dad did call in during the late morning when it was empty and just asked for a drink but were politly turned away as they only serve drinks with food, It is a shame because after sitting their thay may have decided to eat or we may have gone back during the evening. I can understand them saying you can not have a drink if it is busy but when it's empty it just seems silly to me.
Just outside of Pria de Roche is a large shopping centre which has a supermarket, jewellery, music game, and many other shops. it is worth a visit but deep down i feel that this sort of shopping centre will eventually ruin the Mediterranean way of life.
