At a Banquet given by a rich Landowner in Barcelos the silver was stolen and one of the guests was accused of the theft. He was tried by the court and found guilty.
In spite of overwhelming evidence against him he still protested his innocence. The magistrate granted the man a final chance to prove his case. Seeing a Cock in a basket nearby he said "If i am innocent the cock will crow" The cock crowed and the prisoner was allowed to go free.
The Cockerel has now become a symbol of Portugal

This great restaurant is modelled after an Egyptian tomb with paintings on the walls all done in an Egyptian manner. The food was fantastic we had the mixed grill and there was plenty of it. The most memorable bit of our visit to this resaraunt was my Father. We were sat in a room that had all tiled walls and my dad had to make constant remarks about how we were eating in a toilet. I suppose you had to be there really but it made it a most memorable visit and we will be going again next time we are in Alvor. The mixed Grill is Fantastic
The Home Of Elvis

Our first encounter with this restaurant came after walking up R Antonio Jose de Almeida one night and seeing the silhouette of Elvis Presley with one hand pointing out and his knee shaking.
As we neared Elvis he stopped his stage act as he turned around, looked at us and immediately changed in to a Chinese lad, who then gave us a menu for China Garden Restaurante.
Well after this encounter we just had to go.
It's a nice restaurant but not large so booking in busy times would be advised (as in all restaurants in Alvor)
Food was good and great value. Of course they have the usual set menus and a wide choice of dishes. They have a number of special offers including 5.90 E for a starter, main course, Fried rice or chips.
Or for 20.00 E for 2 people (which is what we had)
half peking duck with pancakes or 2 spring rolls or 2 chicken soups.
Prawn Crackers
Sweet sour chicken or sizzling beef.
Chicken Curry

0.375L house wine or 2 soft drinks
Welsh bar/cafe

There is a Welsh bar/cafe in Alvor, it is on Rue Pedro Alvares Cabrai the road that runs parralel to Rue dr fredrico mendes (the main st running down to old fishmarket) about half way down.
Look out for the Red Dragon
sadly this cafe has now closed down and is up for sale (oct 2008)
Watching the Fishermen

I just love to sit and watch the world go by but if on holiday in a fishing village i love to watch fishermen. I don't know what it is, weather it's tending their nets, sorting out the catch or just painting the boat it's just so interesting. In Alvor most of the Fishermen are down at the new fisherman's huts and market but you can still see the old men cleaning and filleting their catch near the old fish market.
