Steak on a stone!
by antz about Buganvilia
This place is great, I went here with Seamie and Fernando from Paddy's one night during the second time I was in Alvor. They took me here as they reckoned it was the best place in Alvor!! I would say that they were right. I had a steak on the stone, which I have only seen done in South Africa before. I love eating my steak this way. For those of you who don't know - you are given a raw steak on a hotplate and you eat it as it cooks. Great fun! Even though this time I was in Alvor, it was November and there was no one about, this place was still packed - shows how good it is!!
Were The Locals Go
by Balam about Alianca Cafe
Set on the main square along with a small church and shops this Bar is normally full of Locals enjoying a Coffee or a beer while watching the world go by. The place has that Local feel and a lot of tourists may be put off on entering as it does have a cafe look. You can sit outside as the square is usually full of tables and chairs and it's a great place to spend some time watching Village life.
A funny little place
by Balam about Tasca Morais
Another great restaurant, The food is Fantastic and service is good,
The toilet is clean but a little strangely positioned, kind of in the middle of the restaurant.
One of only a few places that do a Cataplana for one but the only place that actually leaves the cataplana at the side of the table so you can serve yourself from it.
They also do lovely Fish Soup for starter and they do a nice Grilled Chicken Piri Piri. Cataplana
Out and About

Alvor is a great place to stay and has lots of things to do, you can quite easily spend a week just wondering around or lazing on the beach. There are so many restaraunts and bars that you would not have to eat in the same one twice in a week and enough bars so that you would never remember the last few you staggered out of, but if like me you like to get around and see as much as possible Alvor is a great place to use as a base to see the rest of the Algarve.
Places Like Silves, Lagos, Tavira, Moncheque and of course where everybody comes to but not many really look around, Faro.
All are relatively close by (no longer than an hour) by car.
Taj Mahal

"Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant"
We were in Alvor in December 08 and most disappointed to discover that the Taj Mahal had closed for Christmas. We were previously there back in May 08 and for the first time, ate a curry abroad (never seemed appropriate somehow, we usually stick to local dishes).
We have to say that this was the best curry we have ever eaten, anywhere, including the UK. We are there again in May 09 and hoping that the restaurant will be fully open for the Spring season. Not the cheapest meal we have had in Alvor, but must say absolutely one of the best!! Will get a picture, to post on our return
