Angrinha Beach near Ferragudo, Portugal

by dlytle

From Ferragudo it is a 5-minute walk to the peaceful, golden sand Angrinha beach and then another 5-minute stroll to the historic 15th century Castle of Sao Joao de Arade. Angrinha Beach is closer to Ferragudo than the larger and more popular beach beyond the fortress.

However, although this beach is not as broad, its sand has the same golden glow and the water is as calm and peaceful here although it does not have the facilities that characterize Praia Grande beach. But here on Angrinha beach you will find facilities for windsurfing and canoeing.

"Ferragudo, Portugal"

The picturesque village of Ferragudo is located in the Algarve region of Portugal.

It lies on the Arade River, facing the well-known tourist resort of Praia da Rocha.

It is said to be the most photographed village in the whole of Portugal, and it is easy to see why.

Approaching Ferragudo by road from Portimao provides a stunning view across the harbour (with its numerous fishing boats) to the whitewashed houses on the opposite hillside.

Walking along the beach, you will approach Ferragudo's impressive fort. Due to its position and colour, it looks remarkably like a giant sandcastle.

Unspoiled river port town - Ferragudo, Portugal

"A Picture Postcard Little Fishing Village"

The tourist trade has happily not yet taken over the small and delightful fishing village of Ferragudo, lying across the river between Portimao and Praia da Rocha. Sitting within the eastern breakwater at the mouth of the river Arade, it maintains an air of unpretentiousness. When you look close, there is a somewhat shabby serenity about it. Un-enviously it looks across the river to Portimao and Portimao's beachside satellite, Praia da Rocha.

It has been a fishing village since time immemorial and had defensive walls in the Middle Ages, vestiges of which are still visible today. It has preserved its original character, with rows of houses cascading down to the river, crowned by the outline of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao high on the hill, and pretty streets of whitewashed walls and roofs intersected by decorated chimneys. Romantically said to have once been the home of local pirates, this place has retained much of its unique Portuguese charm. A fleet of small pleasure and fishing boats are typically anchored just off shore from Ferragudo, creating a pleasing vision for the passing tourist.

Ferragudo has two areas of any real interest; the pretty square with a range of cafes and the wharf area which is about half a mile away. During the summer, on weekend evenings, the main square is filled with the sound of music and laughter as the locals and tourists dance the night away. And you can find the port area by following the stream down towards the estuary. It is well worth a visit as it appears authentic rather than festooned for the tourist trade. At the far end of the fisherman's paved area there is an ancient fortress.

Although I didn’t get to visit it in person, but only from afar as we passed by it on our way to anchor near Portimao, I thought that Ferragudo was one of the prettiest little coastal towns that I saw in the region. It has a superb little beach with three bar/restaurants and safe swimming for children on account of the shallow gentle waters protected from the Atlantic by the port breakwaters.

Ferragudo - anyone help please?

by brianriceisnumberone

Hi, I couldn't find a ferragudo forum, so I thought I would try here! We're dithering about booking two weeks at Vitors Village complex in Ferragudo. We have a 2 year old son. I am trying to get my head around the location of it. Specifically, how far is to the nearest nice beach? The main beach (praia grande) looks really nice, but I can't tell if people swim there or not, with it appearing to be on the river.

Also, can anyone give me a true estimation of how long it would take to walk into the main village (square / harbour etc) from Vitors?

Many thanks in advance etc..

The main beach is very nice. There are several restaurants at the beach and beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent. The water is a good temperature for swimming. The village is also quite nice, several restaurants, working fishing boats and an open market on the weekend (I forget if it was Saturday or Sunday - by the way if the cash machine in the square is out of money there is another one just across the canal)

According to Mappy.com Vitors Village is about 2 kilometers from the village. The route they show would take you down a very busy and unattractive road but maybe there is a back way. The beach would be another 25-35 minute walk.

We stayed at a wonderful complex closer to the beach, however the units were 3 levels so they may not be ideal for a 2 year old. Let me know if you would like the name of the complex.

If you have not yet booked your holiday I would suggest that Vila Castelo would be a better bet. The houses at Vitors' Village are excellent, but it is a little further to walk to the beaches, although closer to restaurants. There is also a heated community pool at Vila Castelo.

Hi,
Just wondering if you got to Ferragudo this year, we are just in the process of looking for a holiday next year and have come across an apartment at Club Rio which is just on the beach but having looked at google earth we are a bit concerned about the fact it is based on an estury. Are the beaches safe to have young children going into the sea/play on the sand? Would appreciate your reply before we go booking the holiday if you would advise against going. Thanks.

Hi Sarah - we did go in the end, and enjoyed it so much we're returning in 2009. Indeed the beaches are safe for kids. Just round the corner from Club Rio is Praia Grande - a big open pleasant beach, gently shelving into the sea / estuary. The water is very calm because of the sea wall etc.
