To Swim, or Not To Swim?

by ViktorVaughn

Heading to Lagos in 2 weeks. Spending a few days around Paia Dona Ana. I was wondering what the water temperature would be (approx.) and if swimming is possible, or crazy?

Also, want to head east into Cordoba or Sevilla, Spain. Are there trains or buses heading from Lagos to Cordoba / Sevilla?

Thanks for the help.

Hi
We were in Lagos in January for a week. I went paddling in the sea nearly every day and would have had a swim but the waves were a little too big for my liking, there were a few people swimming. Sea wasn't cold once you got used to it.
The temperatures should be a litle warmer by now so i think it will be possible. I suppose it depends on what you class as cold but coming from the North West of England i found the temperatures to be quite warm. The beaches around Lagos are beautiful and very peaceful at this time of year.
Sorry i can't help re: your other question. Enjoy your holiday.

Hello ViktorVaughn

There is a coach service to Sevilla from Lagos.
Takes 6.5 hrs and costs 19 euros one way.

The Atlantic is never going to be like the Med. and the water can be cold in June/July never mind March. If it helps I was swimming in sea at Xmas and also in March. Cold at first but 'nice once you're in' as they say. Hang on to yer bitz!

its still fairly cold in august.

the atlantic keeps the water in the western part of the algarve fairly cold year around.

Travel Tips for Lagos

Visit Lagos at X-mas!

by Walopkov

At Christmas Lagos has a very special atmosphere. The temperature is at daytime often very pleasent (over 20 cels), also due to the warm sea and the lots of hours of sun.
At nighttime on the boulevard (Avenida de Descrombrimentos) palmtrees will lighten up, thanks to the many mini-bulbs. Very special X-mas trees! After 12 o clock at 31 of december spectalulair fireworks will appear just at the opposite site of the Avenida.
Don't miss it! You won't forget this.... Away from Lagos, I will miss the relaxed atmosphere, the perfect climate (most hours of sun and cleanest air of Europe), the kind people, the clean beaches (white sands surrounded by the most spectaculair rock-formations), the small-scale lay-out of the town, wiht finishethings made with a great eye of details (parks, roundabouts, etc).
This makes I will have to go back at least three times a year (and never miss X-mas time...).

Breakfast

by kevin36 about Britaica

The setting is down a side street with tables and chairs outside, looks like a normal tavera nothing to suggest otherwise.
However I have never had a Chicken Salad like they make here, fresh with slices of apple on top, it was lovely.
The service is very good friendly staff, nothing appears to be too much, and the service is quick.
The overall ambiance to britaica is laid back no need to rush. Breakfast is very reasonable, with scrambled egg ,bacon mushrooms ham, along with rolls and Jam,and coffee or tea with orange juice.
A nice way to start the day.
Chicken Salad ,freshly prepared and very tasty,im not a salad person normally but i do like theirs.
Ice creams to die for ,they have a wide selection of specialized ice creams,so be sure not to eat too much on the main meal.

If you like Zoos...

by Westbrook

Lagos Zoo is great. Especially if you like Zoos.

And if you like monkeys.

We're approaching mid 30s, but the Zoo sounded like an interesting diversion. It was. It only takes an hour to get around and the drive there takes you through some charming rural inland Algarve.

This place is aimed squarely at kids with lots of fowl roaming free, a farm section and barrels of monkeys doing monkey-like stuff on their specially constructed islands. Better than cages. We liked the monkey islands. Good Zoo thinking.

Lagos, not a great deal to see here

by Maxus

"but popular with mariners and backpackers"

Although Lagos has less of the package tourists (who frequent lots of resorts along the Algarve) it is popular with backpackers and considered something of a party resort . It is packed with places to eat and bars.

I thought the railways in Portugal were good, we travelled down from Lisbon on the night train, it was OK but I have never been back so it cannot have impressed me that much.

The line from Lisbon to Faro has been improved since then and air-conditioned InterCity trains now cross the Tagus by bridge so you no longer need to take a ferry to Barreiro station (across the river from Lisbon) before you start your journey south.
