Travel Tips for Lagos

Cape St Vincent

by kevin36

If your looking for a romantic evening ,hire a car and go to Cape St Vincent and see the Sunset .
lots of couples go there in the evening just to watch the sun go down ,can be spectacular.
It will take you just over half an hour to an hour depending on traffic.
While your there if your lucky look over to the cliffs with the shear drop and see if you can see any fishermen fishing.(they do call them suicide fishermen) we couldn't believe our eyes when we saw them.if you look very carefully in the picture you will see one ,a very small dot almost in the middle of the picture at the edge.

Old Slave Market

by Balam

In one corner of The Praca da Republica, under the arches of the old customs house is what was Europes first Slave Market. (mercado de escravos). The market opened in 1444 and it is said that within a hundred years up to 10,000 slaves were being shipped from Africa every year just to meet Portugusese demand alone. the customs House now serves as an art Gallery.

Fortaleza de Sagres

by kevin36

The Fortress of Sagres,
What a view, from the outside just looks like a large fort? but inside its like the tardis.
I was amazed just how big it was inside? this is one of those places that is not what it seems inside.
A national monument and Natural Park .
you can expect to spend at least 2hrs here if you walk around the whole site.
But to my surprise I came across the suicide fisherman, fishing off the steep cliffs.
You got to have nerves of steel to fish like they do.
There were a few people we came across having picnics there too and explained that they spend all day there just watching the world go by.
There is an exhibition center and a 16th century Church inside, The Church of Nossa Senhora.
and the scenery is simple and unspoilt.

City Walls

by Willettsworld

The city walls that still surround the older part of Lagos give a real feeling of history as you follow them around the town. Opposite the fort on the water front (Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira) are the twin watchtowers either side of St. Gonçalo's gate. The walls date from the 16th century and have bulwarks at intervals that allowed the use of artillery. The best way to see them is to walk around the outside - there are landscaped gardens and paths to enjoy while you walk.
