The youth hostel was clean, and seemed pretty safe. It is located in a street with some bars, so you can have a night out and just walk back to your room...
In case you call the hostel in the morning and they said they are full, try going there around noon-1pm, they will put you on a waiting list in case of a no-show. That is how i got my bed in Lagos..
the hostel in Lagos was near various bars, but it was kind of far from the bus/train stations.
