Long term apartment
by rachou
Hello,
My husband and I are looking for an apartment (not too expensive) in Lagos for 4 months (Feb to May 2006). We want to avoid larger built up tourist area. What is the best way to find one? Do local have apartment to rent? How much does it cost to rent for 4 months?
Also, my husband is an artist (drawing & painting). Where can we meet other artists in Lagos?
Thank you

Hi,
some of the best deals you can get are to actually bargain once you get out there and try the local paper, however i appreciate thats often hard to do as its nice to know where you are heading. As for artisits, there are plenty of galleries and people are friendly enough so i think just poppping his head in and getting known is the best way - there are a lot of artists in this area!
i use this site for our accommodation and they have a couple of listings for lagos but not sure if its in your budget, still may be worth a look:

Church of Santo António (St Anthony)
by acilina
The Lagos Museam is connected with the
Church of Santo António (St Anthony).
Rebuilt in 1769 at the initiative of the commander of the Lagos Regiment of Infantry, it served him as a chapel.
For that reason the image of the patron saint received a captain's wages, increased to those of a lieutenant-general from1780 onwards.
The facade is typically baroque with an interesting eye-window and pediment. It has two belt towers of different proportions On the lateral facade there is a large porch formed by a renaissance portal (16th century), originally taken from the Former Compromisso Maritimo (Maritime Agreement) The charm of the church resides principally in the rich profusion of gilded carving to be found inside it, which covers the high altar and the side walls, making it a prime example of what is one of the most striking features of the Portuguese baroque. Whimsical baroque forms are to be found side by side with curiously realistic scenes (a pig being slaughtered, a fishing scene. etc) on the pedestals and lateral panels of the pilasters. Beneath the choir, there is a carved panel showing Our Lady nursing the Baby Jesus. Paintings depict scenes from the life of the saint. There is a tiled ashlar with kneeling angels (dating from around 1730). The roof is made of wood in imitation of the vault of a cradle, and is decorated with a painting in perspective. There are also statues of Santo António (St. Anthony) with a military sash, Santo Elói (St. Elói) and São José (St. Joseph) (18th Century).
The statue of Dom Sebastiao.
by cachaseiro
On the main square ín Lagos you have a rather odd statue of a person who look a bit like someone from Mars.
It is a modern statue of the portugese child king called Sebastiao who came to power in 1568 and tried to invade Morocco and ended with a terrible defeat where he was most likely killed (he was never seens since) and Portugal ended up becoming a part of Spain for a while.
The fact that he went missing during the battle meant that there were many myths created about him and many people thought he would return to free Portugal again.
The statue they have of him today in Lagos is not pretty, but it sure stand out.
Lagos. Very far south, very touristic.
by Inimbrium
On the south western point of Portugal.
Great beaches, great tourist facilities.
Typical touristic place, but still, very nice.
The water is cold and salty as it is the Altantic Ocean.
Big waves too, but I like waves. :-)
