Nice 4 star hotel in a perfect location.

    by

The Tivoli hotel in Lagos is a nice 4 star hotel with good facilities such as a couple of restaurants, nice common areas, swimming pool and a free shuttle service to Meia praia.
The rooms are ok and the staff is helpful.
And first of all it´s set in a very good location right in the center of town which i think is what you want in an interesting town like Lagos.
If you are looking for a hotel in the nicer end of the scale while in Lagos then i would recommend this place.

Unique Quality: Fine hotel in a perfect location.

Directions: One block from the river.

stayed in room 811 on 30/07/06 for 7 nights.room 811 is in one of the 4 storey blocks which were the original hotel, the rooms are very small and cramped only half size of some other 4 star hotels. There was a partial seaview however but the balcony is too small to have both a table and 2 chairs on so they do not supply a table.
Breakfast is good apart from the coffee which comes out of a machine which is disgusting.
The rest of the hotel is ok,well kept and clean
Reception staff are not that freindly
There were not enough sun beds available around the pool in august unless you were up early
ALL IN ALL THE ROOM LET THE HOTEL DOWN,IWOULD SAY THE HOTEL IS A 4 STAR BUT THE ROOMS ARE ONLY 3 STAR

Unique Quality: WHILST IN LAGOS TRY TO EAT IN TAVERNA DE LAGOS,A LOCALS RESTERAUNT NEAR TO THE HOTEL.AS GOOD A SEAFOOD AS ANYWHERE ELSE AND A LOT CHEAPER AND ANOTHER POTUGEASE RESTERAUNT OFF THE MAIN SQUARE BUT UP A HILL BACK TOWARDS THE HOTEL KNOWN AS THE BLUE DOORS.TAKE ATRIP TO THE GROTTOS AND TO THE DOLPHINS AND TRY TO GET ROUND THE NEW MARINA AREA

Off the beaten track next to Hotel Tivoli Lagos you'll will find this hidden gem. Nothing special regarding interior just a typical local restaurant. Staff a bit reserved but if you take the first step you'll get a good interaction and some smiles. I hade the grilled swordfish platter and this was absolutely perfect. This meal is something that I will remember long after all other memories of Lagos has faded. If you want to eat typical algarvian cooking and to be sure to get really fresh ingredients and also be sure to have it in a typical local setting. This is the place for you.

Excellent experience

by TripAdvisor Member janfrw

I've stayed at the Tivoli Lagos last week and I was positively impressed with the quality of their service and prices. Friendly and helpful staff, excellent breakfast and restaurants (Italian and Portuguese Cuisine). The spa services with Decleor products are high quality.
Obviouly it's not a 5 star hotel and the rooms need a new air-conditioning system but everything was clean and from my window I could see the sea...I read someone saying something about only having the view from other buildings,
What else? Well, I can assure you it's not very common for a four star hotel to have free internet. So, another nice surprise!
I definitely recommend the Tivoli-Lagos. Last but not the least, close to the town centre (about 10 minutes) where you can find everything you need.
Cheers
Jan

Just returned from there!

I have to say having never stayed in the Tivoli before but been to Portugal over the last 10 years I was a little aprehensive after reading some of the reviews.

It was the cleanest hotel I and my fiance have ever stayed in, the breakfasts were excellent with plently of variety, the sun shone and even though we managed to play golf 6 times it rained ... for 10 mins! The hotel is a great base from which to explore the back streets of Lagos with some fantastic restauurants, Dom Henrique was rekitted out only 2 years ago, great shell fish all over, chicken piri piri and the espresso duplo and maciera (brandy for the uninitiated). Superb, although the prices of the drinks etc in the hotel were about the same as the UK so is that pricey? It is far cheaper to eat out for £30-£40 for 2 people with wine and sweet and coffee so I guess it is an excellent deal.

The hotel staff were excellent in particular Nelson (this guy is a star who sorted out all our niggles - to do with the car, not the hotel.) and the otehr staff who treated guests with respect, thank you.

We'll be back.

A Superb Hotel

Stayed at this hotel on two seperate occasions 8/9 years ago before kids and loved it. Returned this year as a family with two young children and was definately not disappointed. It is situated 5 minutes from the town centre- which has a wonderful family atmosphere in the evenings- and runs a courtesy bus to the fantastic Meia Praia beach several time a day. At the beach there is a reserved area and beach club which serves good food and hosts a swimming pool and tennis courts. The kids loved it. There is a kids club with limited facilities and we did not use it but we went on holiday to spend quality time together as a family so wouldn't normally use these facilities.

The hotel itself is warm and friendly and the staff were extremely helpful. Food is great and only once did we experience a problem with slow service but apologies were given. We plan to return again soon and would reccommend to all, couple and families alike, who are looking for a relaxing break without the "Butlins" atmosphere of the many "kids club hotels".

A great hotel in a great location in a beautiful part of the Algarve!

Extremely Satisfied - Highly Recommend

by A TripAdvisor Member

Reception was very accommodating and friendly. Room request for pool view was accepted and upgraded at no charge. Also happy to accept our further change to move to triple for 2 nights. Room quality was great - unsure why some older reviews said was 'tired'.

Location - outstanding, 50m from the small bus station (yet no noise) and short stroll to town centre. Would also recommend Lagos is the only place to stay in the Algarves, good town with restaurants (but not too big), and great beaches walking distance. The Tivoli also has it's own beach club/pool which was excellent, apart from pool in main complex.

Didn't try the hotel's 3 restaurants, but breakfast buffet included was great.

Algarves water is cold though, but if you are young advise try the sea kayaking for E25, get right in amongst the grottos. great trip

Summer Bliss!

My husband and I travelled to Lagos in August this year (2005) and after reading many reviews, booked the Tivoli. We were pleasantly suprised at the standard of this hotel, compared to other 4 star hotels in Europe.

Our room had a balcony with a view over Lagos and the bathroom was spotless. I must admit that we didn't use the hotel pool, but that was only because we took the bus provided by the hotel, to their beach resort and spent 4 out of 5 days lazing by the pool, at the beach resort.

The staff were friendly and spoke very good English and the buffet breakfast offered a great variety. I would definitely recommend staying at the Tivoli.

Just right

Great staff, warm reception, baby friendly, good facilities.
The hotel is a short walk to the centre of town (Lagos is gorgeous) and the harbour. It has a beach with its own pool too. It's good value.
Criticisms? It's a little safe, I mean there is nothing that might offend one person and delight another. But as it doubles as a business hotel, this is OK.

Lagos, Portugal

"Hotel"

Tivoli Lagos - fantastic hotel in a central yet quiet location wih many facilities and efficient staff. If you are going there for a special occasion, email the hotel in advance, we were on our honeymoon and were upgraded to a large suit near the quietest end of the hotel. We also paid extra to have flowers, strawberries & chocolates in the room, sparkling wine is free if you are on honeymoon. All rooms are air-conditioned. Tha breakfasts are varied with choice of continental/english/fruits/cereals etc... Swimming area has spare loungers and when we were there (July) it was fairly quiet. The staff are not the friendliest but they are very good at their jobs and the hotel is always spotlessly clean.

Where to Stay?

by ajbrowne

Hi

We are travelling to the Algarve area in Portugal in March and would like some advice on where to stay. We will have our own car and would like to be near the Beach. Good restaurants and nightlife would be a plus. We were leaning towards Lagos but haven't decided yet. Any recomendations?

Thanks

Andrew

Lagos and Albufeira are the two main towns in the Algarve for what you need.

I have been to Lagos recently and liked it very much. We stayed at Tivoli Lagos a resort style hotel opposite the marina. It was nice enough but probably not what you are looking for (lots of retirees escaping the British winter).

Lagos itself is a nice little town, if somewhat touristy. My husband and I call it the Gold Coast of Portugal with lots of development, no high rises though. It does have some lovely beaches very close by, a marina with restaurants, shops etc and a nice friendly holiday atmosphere if thats what you are looking for. If you go there, the sailing trips out to the grottos are worth doing and not very expensive. Portugal is a very affordable destination compared to Australia. You will have no trouble finding some nice cheap meals.

If you want to be right in the middle of the action I would suggest Portimão. If you want to be close to the nightlife I would suggest Ferragudo. Ferragudo is a small town with a very nice beach, restaurants at the beach and in town, and a short drive or boat ride from Portimão. We stayed at Villa Castelo and not only were they a great bargain, we could also walk to the beach.

i lived in the algarve for a year and a half (in lagos) but i would recommend the small village of salema if you really want to see some of the more unspoiled algarve and still be by the beach.
salema is about half an hour drivew west of lagos.

Praia da Rocha (PDR), the seafront of Portimão is a very relaxing, convenient and snazzy place to go.

It has a beautiful long sandy beach, marina with bars, restaurants and cafes overlooking the Arade river and the sea.

You are very close to Ferragudo+ Alvor and from PDR you easily do day trips to Lagos and Monchique.

Have a great time wherever you decide to stay in the Algarve.

I generally agree with the other guys opinion. By the the time of the year you are coming, don't expect to have loads of fun with nightlife (if there is gonna be any). Lagos is my favorite town in Algarve. Faro may suit you as it's basically the only city in Algarve which doesn't suffer from seasonal variations. It's not so close to the sea as other options, but still a short car ride to places like Vale de Lobo, Quinta do Lago, Vilamoura and so many others.
