Hotel from Hell
Beware this hotel... My girlfriend and I have just returned from this hotel, we had a nightmare 10 days! On arrival the hotel seems good, nice lounge area and that's just about where it ended for us. Staff we adequate nothing more than that, the food very average, we even had to queue for milk in our tea at breakfast as it seemed they did not allow jugs to be placed on tables, and was just too trouble to do so.
Our first full day started with the arrival of approximately 300 Irish guests! From then on the nightmare began with shouting and door slamming in the corridors at 3am, to drunken singing from the nightclub directly outside the hotel at that time too! This carried on each and every night of our stay, although we complained, nothing was done...
All of the entertainment in the hotel was aimed at the Irish. With singers, bands and an 'Irish' Elvis, even the lift music had an Irish theme to it! It felt like we were being brainwashed.
If we had know we would be coming to Portugal to experience Ireland we would have stayed at home!
We spoke to a bar owner opposite the hotel and were told that this happens every year apparently, so if you are thinking of booking this hotel, please, please, make sure that it is not during one of these weeks or you will be guaranteed no rest or sleep at all! We would recommend you stay at the 'Atlantis' hotel next door, it is a 5 star hotel and as you would expect has a much better location and facilities all round, the Dom Pedro Golf hotel is supposed to be a 4 star hotel, but at best only an English 3 star.
Do yourself a favour, if you can, pay a little bit extra for peace and quiet on your vacation, after all that's what your are going for, and give the Dom Pedro Golf hotel a miss!
Great place for a Relaxing Break
Have just returned from a 5 day break at the Dom Pedro Golf. I would highly recommend the clean & friendly hotel. The location is fantastic with it being in easy reach of both the Marina and the beach but not too close to be affected by the noise of the late night bars. We found the air conditioning to be highly effective in the 35 degrees C + heat and the rooms were very spacious. The grounds are very lush & well maintained although slightly sheltered from any much needed breeze during the hot weather. Seeing as we picked one of the busiest times of year there was a bit of a shortage of sunbeds by the pool by about 11am. Is always nice to see that the Portugese choose to stay at the hotel. We only ate breakfast & pool snacks at the Dom Pedro, especially as there are so many fantastic restaurants to choose from on the Marina. There were a couple of days where we had to queue to have breakfast but as I said, it was very busy. Would definitely visit again & in fact we are going back later in the year for a long weekend!
Beware of the Timeshare sales operated by this hotel!!!!
We have just returned from a week at this 4 star Dom Pedro Golf Hotel (one of 3 Dom Pedro hotels in Vilamoura). The hotel facilities, food, location, accommodation and staff were very good and overall the holiday was enjoyable but for one blight - the Dom Pedro group are just embarking on a TIME SHARE operation.
On our first full day (Sunday) we were approached by a very pleasant young lady who informed us we needed to register for a VIP pass to enable us to use the facilities of their other hotels (even though we had already had been told these facilities were possible in the Thomas Cook brochure), having got through the registration we were then informed that the hotel had recently refurbished rooms on the 9th floor which were of 5 star quality and that the hotel would like to show us a the rooms and a video of their other hotels in Madeira and Lisbon so that we could 'recommend them to our friends' and as a ' thank you for giving up about an hour of our time we could choose one of 3 gifts (2 for 1 meal at their hotel, an evening cruise or a discount voucher). Appointment was booked at 9.45 am.
On the day of the appointment we were taken to their newly built conference suite on site, and handed over to, what turned out to be, a TIMESHARE sales person, who for the next TWO & A HALF HOURS attempted to convince us that investing in one of these converted rooms on the 9th floor as a timeshared asset for 40 years was an excellent alternative to paying for your holiday each year.
Eventually at 12.15pm he gave up and 'released us' with gift. This wasted a complete morning of our 7 day holiday.
The main complaint is the covert manner in which this was set up on the back of what appeared a legitimate registration for a hotel group pass and the amount of time then taken before they finally accepted the answer was NO THANK YOU. Tour operators appear to be aware of this but appear helpless or reluctant to inform their clients of the TIMESHARE operation.
Nothing wrong with the rest of the holiday and would be happy to recommend the hotel, etc., but at least you will be prepared for the TIMESHARE catch if you do go.
Nice place to stay
Just returned from a week at the Dom Pedro Golf. We have stayed at many hotels worldwide, and some exceptional ones too. (Burj al Arab in Dubai was one)
For a family holiday with 2 children its is ideal. Short flight from the UK, short journey from the airport, close to the beach and marina.
The pool area is very good. The pool is not as cold as others on the Algarve as it is slightly sheltered. Garden areas are well kept and there is plenty of space. Tennis courts are well kept and there is a volleyball net and some football nets, along with a small childrens playground. All swimming abilities are catered for with the 3 pools various depths.
The hotel doesnt have shops, but does have a hairdressers and a games room. The vast lobby area is never crowded, and comfortable although a little unstylish. The rooms are similar, clean, functional, linen and towels changed daily, and no unsightly grime around the bath/shower. Air con was ok. Again a little unstylish.
The dining room is probably the least appealing area in the hotel. It is in dire need of a refit. Breakfast is ok, but dinner is buffet also, which we personally dont like. It is a matter of taste (pardon the pun!)
There are many restaurants in Vilamoura to choose from - slightly more expensive on the marina itself, but a huge choice.
The reception staff are a little sour faced, but you CAN crack them!!! They are not intentionally miserable - its their personality!
In the hotels defence, they have an extensive refurbishment programme planned for the Winter months. There are a number of improvements which we have been advised of - all of which will be most welcome. And yes, they are selling Timeshare, the modern term is 'holiday ownership', but they dont lock you in a room and interrogate you for hours. They have an open door policy and you can leave whenever you like - unless you are desparate to get your free gift for attending.
We admit that we have bought into the 'holiday ownership'. Maybe we have made a huge mistake, maybe not. But in this life if you dont take chance you will never know. However, we were free to make this choice, neither Lilly or anyone else mentioned in previous reviews made us do it. After all, Lilly is just doing a job like we all do. And I have to say, she is very good at it, and extremely polite. Dont avoid her - just be nice to her! You can still say NO in a positive and polite manner. And finally, Jose, who has been mentioned before, is a gem.
We come back this year 2006 because this hotel is fantastic
From the 12 th of july till the 24 th - 2005
We stayed in the hotel last year 14 days in the month of july. We are going back this year for 2 weeks in july !
The hotel is fantastic ! We are 2 singles from Belgium and we enjoyed our stay.
Every evening the food was delicieus and the music with the different shows were beautifull. The people who works there are very kind. We hope for a pleasant holiday ! L' hotel est formidable et les employées sont très sympathique !
Just returned from this hotel. On checking in was told they did not have our reservation but luckily enough they did eventually find us a room. We had originally booked into a club room sea view and was told this is what we would receive and that these rooms were refurbished in 2004. We were allocated a room on the sixth floor and on checking in to the room felt that this room had never been refurbished in the years it had been built, granted the bed was clean but that is it. The whitewashed walls looked like years of tobacco had stained it. We did have a good sea view but also a view of a very busy main road, the furniture was old and even though the rooms were cleaned every day sometimes at 4.30 p.m. our feet were still filthy from the floor. We were supposed to be given VIP treatment because we had originally booked a Club Room but this did not materialise. If you book this hotel don't bother with the Club rooms they are identical to the standard,
There are plenty of sunbeds around the pool and the gardens and you will always get one although there were the usual 9.00 a.m. rush to get the beds around the pool.
The hotel is only 5 minute walk to the Marina and I would say that that is the hotel's best feature.
Vilamoura is a lovely area with plenty of restaurants shame the hotel did not live up to its glorious website.
Good value Reception Poor
I have stayed at this location on 3 occasions which obviously indicates I have enjoyed it. If you are a Golfer this is a first class location leaving you with short trips to a number of top courses. The Hotel breakfast is of very good quality and variety. The Waiters are very friendly but the Reception staff in general I have most times found to be very abrupt and give the wrong impression of the Hotel. The rooms are clean but in most cases are now showing their age. They are trying to overcome this by renovating some rooms but then passing them off as 5 star. There is entertaiment most nights but this can be repetitive. Within 5 minutes walk is the Harbour with a rich abundance of Restaurants visit the Italian on the front this is great value for money. The beach is a 5 minute walk and clean. I have visited in January, March and June to be sure of the sun do not go before May.If you are a driver get out and visit some of the bays near to you will find even more quality restaurants.
The only other problem we found was the number of people touting cards for their back street Restaurants each evening as you walked the Harbour but you soon get used to them. For the elderley no hills to climb.
pacious and Level Suitable for Elderly and Children Alike
We have just returned from a one week stay at this hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the hotel itself is pleasant and spacious if a little jaded. The rooms are very plain with no extras. The standard of housekeeping however was excellent. My family had interconnecting rooms on the seventh floor facing the pool which were showing their age as the balcony door couldn't be locked and were unable to remove the key from the mini-bar.
Breakfast in the dining room was very good with a superb selection of cereals, fruits cold hams cheese and hot and cold drinks.
We regularly availed of room service which arrived promptly delivered by a smiling waitperson. Snacks available at the poolside bar were also very good.
The large wellmaintained garden at the rear of the hotel is the jewel in the crown with a childrens playarea including swings and slides and tennis courts. Kids Club, unfortunately was still not available by July 10th and the evening entertainment seemed to be provided by the same person each evening or else someone very similar.
BEWARE THE TIMESHARE sold under the illusion of a lovely trip to view the hotel's new five star rooms. Do not waste two hours of your holiday by falling into the trap.
Overall I recommend this hotel for families as it is centrally located and also quiet at night and just a five minute walk on the level to the marina.
We really enjoyed the Monday show at the Casino which represented good value for money at 18E per adult for a three course meal and spectacular show and children under four are free.(soup and ice-cream served to children free)
Our favourite restaurant was Ciao on the Marina on the corner opposite the Tivoli Hotel- varied menu, excellent service and great selection of Italian food and good value for money.
Nice hotel, Good People, but absolutely no AC spoiled the visit
This is a generally good hotel with friendly staff and very service. The food is generally of a fair standard, although we tended to eat out at dinnertime. The pool complex was excellent with lots of trees to shelter under when the sun was too strong. There were pleanty of sunbeds and covers an no problem getting access to a bed when required. My only complaint about this hotle, and it is a serious one considering the local climate, is the absolute lack of any effective air conditioning. Although the hotel advertises that it is air conditioned, it is absolutekly not. The room AC seems to set at 10 degrees below the outside temperature, which is not sufficient for comfort when the outside temperature is above 40 degrees. Effective AC is a basic requirement of a 4 star establishment. Its absence renders this hotel unnacceptable in my opinion.
Overall an excellent hotel only a few buts!
After booking a late deal with [--]checkin2[--] at a fraction of the price advertised elsewhere, we arrived at the hotel with a lovely reception area with excellent first impressions. The location of the hotel was extremely central with literally a five minute walk to the maria and only a few minutes walk to the beach, with a supermarket conveniently located opposite with a few restaurants and cafes also surrounding. We do advise that you buy cheap drinks from the supermarket and replace these with the more expensive same drinks in the hotel mini bar. The casino although mainly aimed at the Portuguise is also a great place to visit on an evening.
The rooms although quite plain and basic are extremely clean, well looked after and well presented by the lovely chamber maids. Who were extremely obliging. I do advise that you may not neccessarily want to pay extra for a sea view room as the standard room which looks over the pool is so much better.
We travelled in a group of six including males and females aged 15-80 with a variety of age groups in the hotel we do feel that no matter what age you are the hotel will be most enjoyable.
Breakfast was varied and was great to fill up for the day ahead. We advise that you get there around 9am because after this time queues do form!
The pool area and relaxing outdoor bar area and gardens was the highlight of the hotel as was the lovely Jose (or Joseph to us Brits), he was so friendly and bent over backwards to help everyone.
My only but is the the charming beautiful and friendly Lilly who sat behind her desk in the lobby. I have noticed on other reviews people also talking about Lilly who was there to con the hotel guests in to a 2 hour long talk about 'turning the hotel in to a five star' however this information was incorrect and was infact a 'TIMESHARE' although a pain we will remember being bored and annoyed for probobly the rest of ourl ives! If didn't ruin our holiday by no means do not be conned like so many guests were.
Overall the marina was lovely and the hotel was one we would definitely visit again without any hesitation.
